Over the last few months, us Gears fans have been fed with tons of Gears of War: E-Day news. From the gameplay revealed in the June showcase, the beta weekends (I played both), and most recently, influencers and journalists were given access to a segment of the campaign to play. As a Gears megafan, I love everything that has been revealed so far, so much so that I’m more hyped for this than GTA VI. However, there are some things that I haven’t seen yet that I hope will make it into the final release of the game come October 6. So as I patiently wait for this game to come out, this is my wishlist for Gears of War: E-Day.
Padrick Salton
Before the game was fully revealed at the Xbox showcase this year, I assumed the Squad we’d follow would be Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago, Tai Kaliso, and a character that’s only appeared in the novels and comics, Padrick Salton. Pad is an Islander gear who fought in the Pendulum Wars and was considered one of the greatest snipers in the COG army. While we know Tai will make an appearance (not as a part of Bravo squad unfortunately), we haven’t heard anything about Pad aside from a brief collectable description from the campaign demo. Initially, I was a little disappointed that The Coalition decided to create the completely new characters of Reyes and Carter, as Gears is known to have a wide variety of characters from the books that haven’t made it to the games yet. However, as I learn more about them, they seem to be good additions to the cast. But Padrick Salton has always been one of my favourite characters from the books; from his funny quotes to just being a straight-up badass, I hope he makes an appearance in some way, even if it’s just a multiplayer skin.
Aspho Fields Prologue
One aspect I feel a bit more confident will be in the campaign is a prologue set in the Pendulum Wars, before the Locust were a threat. Specifically, the battle in Aspho Fields, one of the most important battles for the COG, ultimately leading to them winning the war against the UIR. What makes me think the campaign will feature this as a prologue, or at the very least a chapter, is the emphasis on Marcus and Dom’s relationship post the death of Dom’s brother and Marcus’ best friend, Carlos. Carlos Santiago died in the battle of Aspho Fields trying to protect Marcus. Carlos was first introduced in the novels and comics, but this will be his first direct mention in the games.
Grenade Tagging
A prominent feature in the Gears of War games is the ability to stick grenades onto surfaces and enemies, acting as a landmine/sticky grenade. At least from what we know from the beta, this feature has been removed, which I found pretty disappointing, especially because it is unclear why. I constantly found myself instinctively trying to plant grenades to set up traps for enemies, as it allows for information gathering and covering your flank. The Gears community has been very vocal about this change, along with some others such as no chainsaw duels and the removal of the Boltok Pistol. The Coalition has already demonstrated that they do listen to fan feedback and implement changes that the community asks for, so I’m hoping that this will be one of those times, even if they do add this feature later on in the game’s life cycle.
Classic MP Map Reworks
Gears of War: E-Day introduces a completely overhauled movement system with jumping, climbing, and sliding. This new movement naturally creates new ways to navigate the map, especially in the versus multiplayer. All the versus maps are brand new and are all set in the city E-Day takes place in, Kalona. These maps will all make use of the new movement system by increasing verticality and creating new ways to enter encounters. However, Gears is known to have well-designed maps, with some even being included in nearly every Gears entry, such as Gridlock, Bloodrive, Canals, and my personal favourite, Mercy. Us fans have been wondering if these beloved maps will return in E-Day in one way or another, because if they were to be added, they would need to be reworked to accommodate the new movement. I’m hoping some of these maps will be added in future updates, along with the potential for The Coalition to add some of the less popular ones like Jacinto, Day One, and Pavilion.
Ultimately, if none of these end up being added to the final version of the game, I’d be a little disappointed. However, Gears of War: E-Day is shaping up to be one of the best entries since Gears 3. It seems like Gears of War is finally returning to the grittiness of the older games and leaning into the horror aspects from Gears 1. I’m super excited for the future of this franchise.

Godspeed is back! Full Series and a Movie in Production!
It’s finally happened! Olan Rogers and Ben Bjelajac’s GODSPEED is becoming a full series and a FEATURE FILM! It’s been a while since we heard anything about it, but the not-at-all-Final-Space-Spin-Off (be cool guys) is coming back under the banner of Lightfold.
