Stealth shooter Espire: MR Missions is getting a standalone release in early access, free for existing Espire 2 owners.
Espire: MR Missions, released last month, expands on the mixed reality mode previously seen in Espire 2: Stealth Operatives. It comes with 29 different missions that dynamically adapt to your home, eliminating guards and avoiding traps between 21 small single-room missions and 8 large multi-room missions. It is currently being released for the broader Quest platform.
Developer Digital Lode detailed their rationale for releasing this standalone, advising that as mixed reality technology evolves, “MR mode has proven to be extremely difficult to maintain within the larger Espire 2 VR game.” The developer also believes that room-scale mixed reality offers a different appeal than Espire 2’s fully immersive VR missions.
As such, Espire 2: Stealth Operatives will revert to being 100% VR focused, and existing MR support will eventually be removed. As such, anyone who purchased an Espire 2 on Quest before today’s launch will receive MR Missions for free, and all future Espire 2 owners will receive it at a discounted rate.
Among the latest additions, the early access release of MR Missions comes with five new missions and a new target shooter game mode. Digital Lode advised that the core “Espire Spatial Adaptation System” for adapting levels to space has seen “significant improvements” and some mechanics have been simplified. There’s also a new user interface designed for mixed reality.
Espire: MR Missions is currently in early access on Quest for $8.99. A full release date has not been confirmed, but the studio has advised that it is preparing a roadmap of “new missions, modes, features, and content.”
