Mike du Jour by Mike Lester – Aug. 16, 2026
Thatababy by Jonathan Lemon – Aug. 16, 2026

It’s a musical Sunday with Kinks komiks from Mike Lester and a Beatles medley from Jonathan Lemon. Backwax is correct questioning the comparison though in the United Kingdom the BBC forced Ray Davies to change the lyrics to “cherry cola” which would be closer to some fake flavored champagnes.

Loved the whole Thatababy string until the last five words from the baby which doesn’t match a Beatles title, though I don’t know how else Lemon could have ended it. But where is the road sign in the last panel for where he ended up at (which, of course, wouldn’t be a song title)?

Laurel by Brian Nelson – Aug. 15, 2026

Still on a nostalgia kick (though as the grandkids remind me good music is always in fashion) we come to this weekend’s Laurel. Yeah, the big cities had Woolworth’s and such but in my small town our five and dime was Valley Variety and the items shown above were there along with needles and thread, whistles, and thousands of other needs. And when you’re eight years old wax teeth were a necessity.

As Mike Peterson said, “I’ve been too old for a very long time.”

Dark Side of the Horse by Samson – Aug. 15, 2026

“Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame seed bun.”

Along with all those song lyrics stuck in my memory banks…

    Memories.

Wallace the Brave by Will Henry – Aug. 12, 2026
E-Man #1 by Nicole Cuti and Joe Staton (Oct. 1973)

Wallace the Brave brought thoughts of the E-Man comic book. Too long ago for young Will Henry‘s time.

    Moving on to the present.

Wallace the Brave by Will Henry – Aug. 16, 2026

Will Henry treats (heh, heh) us to one of his wonderful panoramic thoughtful comics today, though there are no thought balloons. I liked the continuity between the young lady and father on the left with the young man on the right.

    Reporting for Duty

Pardon My Planet by Vic Lee – Aug. 13, 2026
Crock by Don Wilder and Bill Rechin – Aug. 12, 2026 (originally July 16, 1998)

Vic Lee pretty much describes even established news organizations these days. While an old Crock is relevant to modern U.S. sailors around the Strait of Hormuz.

Popeye by Randy Milholland – Aug. 16, 2026

In some nice timing for Michael LigotRandy Milholland features a pairing of Bluto and Brutus in Popeye (with a Hy Eisman mention!).

Prince Valiant by Mark Schultz and Thomas Yeates – Aug. 16

In Prince Valiant the Three Witches have been reunited and are gathering in a coven for mysterious purposes.

    Great Expectations

Beware of Toddler by George Gant – Aug. 16, 2026

Today’s Beware of Toddler was a wonderful illustration of anticipation and dismay.

Over the Hedge by Michael Fry and T. Lewis – Aug. 16, 2026

I had high hopes for Over the Hedge really liking the opening but was disappointed with the denouement. The creators certainly know their characters better than I, but it seemed an improper reaction for one of my favorite comic actors.
