CAPCOM is set to test the Switch 2 hardware ceiling with the Monster Hunter Wilds port

With the Street Fighter 6 port, CAPCOM already proved it knows how to squeeze every ounce of power out of the Nintendo Switch 2 to deliver an extremely good port. However, the real test will be with Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds, the two open-world games powered by the RE Engine that have long struggled to run properly even on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. While we still don’t have any specifics for the former, it seems like the Japanese publisher is set to deliver another impressive port, going from some datamined information.

As reported on the Monster Hunter Leaks subreddit, the latest game update hides new information on the Nintendo Switch 2 port inside its files. Regarding docked mode, the game will employ dynamic resolution scaling with a 1080p/1440p range. Although NVIDIA DLSS will likely help the system quite a bit by upscaling lower internal base resolutions, it will still be impressive to see such a demanding game hit 1440p resolution, even if it does so only in the less demanding sequences.

Regarding handheld mode, Monster Hunter Wilds will not target the Nintendo Switch 2 display’s native resolution, as the dynamic resolution range will be limited to 720p/864p, which is still impressive enough. In addition, the new update’s files also suggest that the game will target up to 40 FPS gameplay, which would make the experience somewhat smoother in portable play thanks to Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support on the display, which sadly the system doesn’t support in docked mode.

Monster Hunter Wilds for Nintendo Switch 2 has been known to be in the works since late last year, but the port’s official confirmation only came back in June. With the new information discovered in the latest update, however, it’s likely the game is not too far from launch.

Regardless of when it launches, NintendoSwitch 2 owners will also experience a much better game than PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S players did at launch, with additional monsters and a refined endgame that addressed one of the main community complaints: the low challenge level. Ultimately, the hard work of Director Yuya Tokuda and his team paid off, bringing back relapsed players just as he wished. And with the Ascendance expansion, the latest entry in the series is set to become bigger, and possibly even better.
