Mirzapur The Movie box office day 1: Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal starrer gets strong opening, surpasses Awarapan 2

    05 September,2026 12:09 PM IST |  Mumbai  |  mid-day online correspondent

Mirzapur: The Movie opened strongly with Rs 24.75 crore net on Day 1, translating the popular OTT franchise into a theatrical success. Starring Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyenndu, the Gurmmeet Singh directorial benefited from strong anticipation among fans

Mirzapur: The Movie has made a strong start at the box office, bringing the much-loved franchise from the streaming world to cinemas. The Gurmmeet Singh directorial, featuring Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyenndu in key roles, opened in theatres on September 4 and registered an India net collection of Rs 24.75 crore on its first day, according to early estimates

The film’s opening comes amid considerable anticipation from fans of the original Mirzapur series. The streaming show has built a loyal following over three seasons, making its transition to the big screen one of the more closely watched theatrical experiments of the year. The strong opening suggests that the franchise’s popularity has successfully translated into cinema audiences.

    Strong box office opening

Mirzapur: The Movie recorded its reported Rs 24.75 crore India net collection across 11,135 shows on its opening day. The numbers are particularly significant given that the film is attempting to establish itself as a theatrical continuation of a franchise that audiences have primarily experienced on OTT.

The movie brings back several familiar faces from the franchise, with Pankaj Tripathi reprising his iconic role as Kaleen Bhaiya, while Ali Fazal returns as Guddu Pandit. Divyenndu is also back as Munna Tripathi. The ensemble further includes Ravi Kishan and other actors who add to the crime drama’s established world.

The film’s theatrical performance was closely watched even before its release, with advance bookings indicating strong interest. The franchise’s popularity, combined with the anticipation around seeing its characters on the big screen, helped create momentum ahead of the opening day.

    All about Mirzapur: The Movie

While the first-day numbers indicate a promising start, the film’s performance over the opening weekend will be crucial in determining whether it can sustain the momentum. Positive audience reactions and strong word of mouth could further boost collections in the coming days.

The film has also generated discussion because it marks an unusual reverse journey for an Indian entertainment property. Rather than a theatrical film expanding into a streaming franchise, Mirzapur is making the transition from a successful web series to a theatrical feature. Industry watchers are keen to see whether the experiment encourages other popular OTT properties to follow the same route.

Early reviews have been largely favourable, although some viewers have pointed to the film’s familiar storyline and extended second half. Still, the return of much-loved characters remains a major attraction for longtime fans.

With Rs 24.75 crore net on Day 1, Mirzapur: The Movie has delivered the kind of opening its makers and franchise loyalists were hoping for. The weekend figures will now determine whether its big-screen ‘bhaukaal’ can continue at the box office.
