Production Committee Responds to Concerns About Anime Adaptation

The account posted a written statement titled “Regarding the Anime Adaptation of Mii-chan and Yamada-san.”

“We, the production committee, sincerely acknowledge the various concerns and opinions that have been expressed regarding the content of the work and its adaptation into animation following the recent announcement,” the statement read.

It continued, “We decided to adapt this work because we believe there is significance in expressing the original manga through animation.”

“We will respect the themes and messages of the original work while proceeding carefully with production so as not to encourage prejudice or misunderstanding. We will also seek advice from experts and include appropriate age ratings and content warnings.”

The statement concluded by asking fans for their continued support of Mii-chan and Yamada-san.

Mii-chan and Yamada-san Depicts the Harsh Reality of Kabukicho

The anime is based on a manga serialized on Kodansha’s official manga app Magazine Pocket, also known as MagaPoke, since September 2024.

Set in Kabukicho, Shinjuku, in 2012, the story follows Yamada, a nightclub hostess working in the entertainment district, and Mii-chan, an inexperienced newcomer who always seems to fall just a little short. It depicts 12 months in the nightlife world surrounding these awkward yet lovable young women.

Although Mii-chan is enthusiastic and energetic, she struggles to read both kanji and social cues. People around her ridicule her and label her as “pitiful.” Despite this, Yamada gradually finds herself drawn to Mii-chan as she watches her continue to work with earnest determination.

In sharp contrast to its charming visuals, the story portrays in uncompromisingly realistic detail the inescapable loneliness and unforgiving circumstances its characters face.

Manga Surpasses 2.8 Million Copies With Only Six Volumes

Mii-chan and Yamada-san has gained explosive popularity, particularly on social media. The manga has surpassed 2.8 million copies in circulation with only six volumes released.

For comparison, when the anime adaptation of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba was announced on June 4, 2018, the manga had 2.5 million copies in circulation across 11 volumes. The comparison illustrates the substantial fan base Mii-chan and Yamada-san has already built.

The manga also placed fourth in the male readers category of Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2026. Related videos on YouTube and TikTok have recorded more than 100 million cumulative views, while the title has repeatedly entered Japan’s top 10 trending topics whenever a new chapter is released. The series continues to attract extraordinary attention across the web and social media.

The manga has already been confirmed to conclude with its upcoming seventh volume, and the serialization has entered its final stage. With many readers watching to see what awaits Mii-chan and Yamada, the anime adaptation was announced on July 26.

Soon after the announcement, the adaptation sparked controversy on social media due to the sensitive nature of the story’s subject matter.
