Microsoft Reportedly Reconsidering Xbox Disc Support Plans

Microsoft Reportedly Reconsidered Xbox Disc Support Plans

Microsoft allegedly prioritized backward compatibility over disc sales before its Xbox business restructuring.

    Highlights

    • Microsoft apparently planned to retain Xbox disc support to preserve backward compatibility before its recent business reset.
    • Digital Foundry’s John Linneman says Project Helix’s physical media strategy is now uncertain following Microsoft’s restructuring.
    • The reported plans come as Sony moves toward ending physical PlayStation game disc production in 2028.

Microsoft had reportedly planned to continue supporting physical game discs on future Xbox hardware before the company’s recent business “reset.” However, that direction may have changed a journalist at gaming technology outlet Digital Foundry. He now says it is unclear whether Microsoft’s next-generation console, Project Helix, will retain disc support

Linneman discussed the topic during the ‘Digital Foundry Direct Q&A’ published on July 31, 2026. He clarified that his comments about Microsoft’s future are speculative. Meanwhile, he statederve physical media as part of its backward compatibility strategy rather than to boost retail disc sales

Backward Compatibility Reportedly Shaped Microsoft’s Disc Strategy

According to Linneman, Microsoft’s earlier plans focused on ensuring players could continue using their existing Xbox game libraries on future consoles. He mentioned that Microsoft was actually very much going to keep up disc support because it wanted to ensure “all your Xbox games were still playable on new Xboxes.”

Linneman also added that Microsoft had reportedly considered options such as an external disc drive or another solution linked to a potential disc-to-digital program. Such an approach could allow players to bring their physical libraries to future Xbox systems without requiring a built-in disc drive. He noted that it is unknown whether those plans survived the company’s recent restructuring.

Looking ahead, Linneman said, “I do see a future where Microsoft actually supports discs going forward,” while emphasizing that nothing has been officially confirmed by the company.

Sony’s Physical Media Shift Adds Context

The discussion comes as Sony continues to face criticism over its decision to end production of physical PlayStation game discs beginning in January 2028. During the company’s first-quarter (Q1) earnings Q&A, the chief financial officer of Sony, Lin Tao, acknowledged the community’s concerns and stated, “We’re going to cautiously move this forward,” while continuing to evaluate how players engage with its future digital ecosystem.

Linneman’s comments also follow recent remarks from the chief technology officer of Xbox, Scott Van Vliet, after an Xbox network outage. Addressing concerns over access to physical games, Van Vliet said, “disc-based entitlement checks should not prevent players from accessing their games,” adding that the system was designed that way.

Separately, reports have suggested Microsoft is exploring broader backward compatibility initiatives, including bringing Xbox 360 games to both PC and Project Helix between 2027 and 2028. While Microsoft has not commented on Linneman’s latest remarks, the discussion has renewed attention towards how the company could balance digital distribution with long-term preservation of players’ existing game libraries.

Until Microsoft outlines its next-generation strategy, the future of physical Xbox game ownership remains as uncertain as the hardware itself.
