The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced a new theme for the 2027 Met Gala and this time it is titled extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday.
The exhibition will focus on how designers transform familiar and regular clothing, everyday objects into remarkable piece of fashion. The announcement was made on November 5.
From jeans, T-shirts and hoodies to puffer coats, paper, plastic and metal, MET Gala will see and test how designers use their crafstamnship, construction and experimentation to give familiar objects an entirely different meaning.
The exhibition will be held at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York from May 9, 2027, to January 9, 2028. The Met Gala, which raises funds for the museum’s Costume Institute, will take place on first Monday of May.
What is the Met Gala 2027 theme?
The theme, extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday, will look at two broad ideas. The first one will focus on how designers reinterpret familiar garments such as jeans, T-shirts, trench coats, biker jackets, hoodies and puffers.
The second will then show how everyday materials, including paper, plastic and metal, can be beautifully transformed into clothing and wearable art.
The exhibition will also check how clothes acquire meaning through the way people wear, style and care for them.
Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, is organising the exhibition with the assistance of Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben. The exhibition design is by 1009. It will feature two principal sections, titled Familiar Forms and Common Matter.
Some of the designers and labels represented in this section are Matthieu Blazy for Bottega Veneta, Marc Jacobs, Junya Watanabe, Jonathan Anderson for Loewe and Moncler 1 Pierpaolo Piccioli.
Common Matter will focus on the use of ordinary materials such as paper, plastic and metal in fashion.
Among the designers whose work will feature are Rei Kawakubo for Comme des Garçons, Martin Margiela, Helmut Lang and Issey Miyake. The exhibition will also include creations by Glenn Martens for Maison Margiela.
The show will open with selected garments from Jun Takahashi’s autumn/winter 2024-25 collection for Undercover and close with designs by Kunihiko Morinaga for Anrealage, exploring how clothing can challenge conventional ideas about the human body and the way garments are designed to fit.
Why was the original Met Gala 2027 exhibition cancelled?
The new theme follows the cancellation of the previously planned exhibition John Galliano: Horizons, which was expected to open in May 2027.
The retrospective was intended to examine the British designer’s career, but drew criticism because of his past antisemitic and racist remarks.
Galliano was fired from Dior in 2011 after videos emerged of him making antisemitic comments. Following public criticism of the proposed exhibition, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Galliano jointly announced on August 31, 2026, that the retrospective would not go ahead.
The museum subsequently worked on a new concept for its spring 2027 exhibition, resulting in extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday.
When is the Met Gala 2027 and who will attend?
The 2027 Met Gala will take place on May 3, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The accompanying exhibition will open to the public six days later, on May 9, and run through January 9, 2028.
The guest list, co-chairs and official dress code for 2027 have yet to be announced.
