Nearly a year after its initial announcement, Mercedes and the Waning Moon: The Dungeoneering Feats of a Discarded Vampire Aristocrat has its first real production reveal: a teaser trailer, a key visual, a full cast and staff listing, and a confirmed January 2027 premiere window. Wednesday’s disclosure — released alongside the fifth light novel volume and the sixth manga tankōbon, both out in Japan today — ends a production-silent stretch that began when the anime was first greenlit in August 2025. Readers who have followed the J-Novel Club English editions of the light novel now have a name behind the adaptation: producer Hakuhodo DY Music & Pictures, animation studio Teddy, and director Kunihisa Sugishima, per Anime News Network’s full announcement.

The series adapts Firehead’s light novel about Mercedes Grünewald, a vampire born into Orcus nobility as the daughter of a disgraced concubine. Knowing she will eventually be cast aside when her father designates a legitimate heir, the young Mercedes begins dungeon-crawling at kindergarten age — leveraging her species’ biological advantages to build an independent income and protect her mother and aging maid. Her stated goal, borrowed from the series’ central metaphor, is to make her waning moon full: to find, through work and connection, something that makes living worthwhile. The full series synopsis and available volumes are accessible through J-Novel Club’s platform.

What Makes Mercedes Different in a Crowded Isekai Season

The isekai genre has, by its own admission, a saturation problem. Two separate Japanese literary contests banned isekai submissions in 2016 and 2017 precisely because the format had crowded out other fiction — a short story contest run by Bungaku Free Market and Shōsetsuka ni Narō banned isekai submissions outright, and Kadokawa followed with a similar ban the following year. Against that backdrop, what Mercedes and the Waning Moon actually does with its setup carries more weight than usual.

The series belongs to a strand of reincarnation isekai with a specific social argument: its protagonist is not reborn as a commoner with hidden potential, but as a noble who is being actively discarded. The dramatic tension is not “chosen one discovers powers” but “illegitimate child of the system builds self-sufficiency because the system offers her nothing.” Dungeon-delving in Mercedes functions as labor — with risk-adjusted returns, guild-mediated wages, and guild-enforced access rules that mirror what economists call a common-pool resource regime. The adventurers’ guild in Orcus is, without naming it as such, implementing several of the design principles Nobel laureate Elinor Ostrom identified in communities that successfully manage shared resources: licensed user boundaries, tiered access by risk level, and a guild intermediary setting market prices for extracted materials.

The Germanic aesthetic — Grünewald, Orcus, Edelrot Academy, Schwarz Historie — is unusual in Narō fiction, which more commonly defaults to either pan-European generic fantasy or Japanese-inflected settings. It positions the world in a pseudo-Holy Roman Empire register, and pairs the class-struggle premise with a European literary tradition — Dickens on mobility, Zola on hereditary disadvantage — in ways that are not coincidental given the series’ thematic concerns.

The series also does something with vampire biology that is worth noting separately. Vampires in Orcus are not supernatural undead — they are a hereditary species with codified biological traits: enhanced strength and speed, accelerated regenerative healing, and a blood-based nutritional dependency that the text treats not as a curse but as metabolic reality. Real-world hematophagous animals — vampire bats and blood-feeding insects — have evolved complex detoxification systems to handle the reactive oxygen species released when hemoglobin breaks down in digestion; an Orcus vampire would require analogous, upscaled chemistry. The regeneration trait specifically aligns with biological research on organisms like axolotls that retain neotenic stem-cell populations into adulthood, enabling tissue reconstruction that adult mammals have largely lost. The series does not name these mechanisms, but its internal consistency rewards a reader who does.

Full Staff and Cast: What Wednesday’s Announcement Confirmed

The production lineup for Mercedes and the Waning Moon is as follows, per the full ANN production announcement:

Kunihisa Sugishima directs at Studio Teddy. Sugishima’s prior credits include Strike Witches, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Beyblade: Metal Fury — along with the second season of I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level, which was Studio Teddy’s first production as primary animation studio in 2025. The Sugishima-Teddy pairing being used again for Mercedes is a deliberate creative continuity choice by the production committee — it means the team that worked together on the Slime 300 season is intact for this adaptation.

Jun Kumagai handles series composition. His prior credits include Persona 4 the Golden Animation and Aquarion Logos. Nami Shōyama designs the characters, having served as animation director on Buddy Daddies and Yu-Gi-Oh! Go Rush!!. The music is composed by R.O.N (The Classroom of a Black Cat and a Witch, Kuroko’s Basketball) and Shūhei Mutsuki (The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You; Lycoris Recoil).

Voice actress Anna Nagase voices Mercedes Grünewald. Nagase, born in 2005 and affiliated with 81 Produce, is known for Ushio Kofune in Summer Time Rendering and Hack in Yurei Deco. She was 13 years old when the light novel began serialization on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in October 2018 — a detail that frames the casting of a young actress as fitting for a protagonist defined by extraordinary competence at a young age.

No additional cast has been announced.

Studio Teddy and What to Expect in January 2027

Studio Teddy’s background matters here in a way that does not apply to productions from MAPPA or Ufotable. Slime 300 Season 2 was the studio’s first time as a primary animation studio; Mercedes and the Waning Moon will be only their second. For viewers accustomed to tracking studios as quality signals, Teddy is an entity without an established track record to evaluate. That is neither condemnation nor endorsement — it is a data gap. Slime 300 Season 2 was not reviewed as a production showcase, and the finished Mercedes anime will be the more meaningful reference point.

What is known: the studio has been operating for approximately a decade in supporting roles on other productions, so the core workforce has industry experience even if the studio’s headline credit list is short. And the production committee has committed to a January 2027 premiere window — roughly 5 months and 17 days from today — which places it firmly in the Winter 2027 anime season.

What Mercedes Enters: Winter 2027 Is Already Crowded

January 2027 is not an open field. Mashle: Magic and Muscles Season 3 <a href="https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2026-07-02/mashle-magic-and-muscles-season-3-anime-trailer-unveils-january-2027-debut/.239227″ rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>landed a confirmed January 2027 premiere at Anime Expo 2026, with A-1 Pictures and Aniplex behind it. The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All — the yuri manga adaptation that confirmed Nirvana’s “Breed” as its opening theme via Dave Grohl at Anime Expo 2026 — is also targeting January 2027 via CloverWorks. Gacha Girls Corps and Magical Buffs: The Support Caster Is Stronger Than He Realized are also confirmed for the same window, according to Anime Expo 2026 recap coverage.

Mercedes and the Waning Moon enters this season as a Narō-origin adaptation without a prior anime franchise to draw viewers, competing against sequel audiences (Mashle has three seasons of fan loyalty) and a title with genuine mainstream crossover noise (Nirvana). The series’ competitive advantage is its source material’s narrative coherence — a completed story arc, a distinctive Gothic-Germanic aesthetic in a genre where it is rare, and a protagonist whose class-critique premise gives the show a thematic angle beyond dungeon-number-going-up progression. Whether those advantages translate into viewership in a crowded season is a question the January premiere will answer.

No streaming platform for English-language distribution has been announced as of Wednesday.

    How to Read the

The light novel series is published in English by J-Novel Club. Four volumes are currently available digitally; the fifth Japanese-language volume released today. No English release date for Volume 5 has been announced. The full light novel series page on J-Novel Club lists all available volumes. The manga adaptation, illustrated by Pochi Edoya, is also licensed in English by J-Novel Club — six volumes in Japanese, with the sixth also released today in Japan. The manga series page on J-Novel Club covers current English availability.

Readers who want to be caught up before the January 2027 premiere have approximately 170 days. Four volumes of the light novel and however many manga volumes J-Novel Club has translated cover the Stark Dungeon arc, the early Edelrot Academy material, and Mercedes’s first significant political entanglements. The fifth volume, once it arrives in English, will extend that coverage closer to the likely endpoint of the anime’s first cour.

    Frequently Asked Questions

When does the Mercedes and the Waning Moon anime premiere?

The anime is confirmed for a January 2027 premiere window. As of July 15, 2026, no specific broadcast date within that window has been announced, and no streaming platform for English-language distribution has been confirmed. The premiere is approximately 170 days away. Historically, specific premiere dates for January anime are confirmed in October or November of the preceding year, per the ANN premiere announcement.

Who is making the Mercedes and the Waning Moon anime, and is the studio experienced?

Studio Teddy is handling animation, with Kunihisa Sugishima directing. Studio Teddy’s prior work includes I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level Season 2 (2025), which was the studio’s first production as lead animation studio. Mercedes is their second. The studio has approximately a decade of supporting-role experience on other productions, but a short headline credit list as a lead studio. The same Sugishima-Teddy combination from Slime 300 is being retained, suggesting continuity rather than a fresh team assembly, according to the production announcement from Hakuhodo DY Music & Pictures.

How does Mercedes and the Waning Moon stand out in a packed Winter 2027 season?

The series competes with Mashle Season 3 (A-1 Pictures, Aniplex, an established franchise), The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All (CloverWorks, with a Nirvana opening theme drawing mainstream attention), and several other January 2027 debuts. Mercedes enters without prior franchise recognition. Its potential differentiator is a completed source narrative with a coherent class-critique premise — a protagonist whose survival strategy is economic self-sufficiency rather than combat power fantasy — set in a pseudo-Germanic world that is visually and thematically unusual for the isekai genre. Whether that distinctiveness translates into viewership in a competitive slot will not be clear until the premiere. Full Winter 2027 context is covered in Anime Expo 2026 wrap-up coverage at TechTimes.

Is the Mercedes and the Waning Moon light novel available in English?

Yes. J-Novel Club publishes the light novel and manga adaptation in English digitally. Four light novel volumes are currently available. The fifth Japanese-language volume released today (July 15, 2026) in Japan; no English release date for Volume 5 has been announced. The manga’s sixth volume also released in Japan today. J-Novel Club subscribers can access all four current English light novel volumes and the available manga volumes through the J-Novel Club series page.
