Mel Gibson apologizes after making fun of ASL translator at fan event

Gibson was recorded at FanExpo Canada in Toronto, mimicking the translator’s sign language

Mel Gibson has issued an apology after sparking online outrage. The actor and director was one of the guests at FanExpo Canada in Toronto and was recorded mimicking the gestures of the sign language interpreter who was also onstage.

The video shows Gibson walking out onstage, using various hand movements while he looked at the ASL translator in front of him, who was facing the crowd. The video was shared on Saturday and gained traction online, with many expressing their disappointment. 

“Sometimes when you get pushed out on a stage in a spotlight your mind is all over the place, and sometimes spontaneous thoughtless idiocy is displayed,” said Gibson in a statement to PEOPLE.

“There was no intended maliciousness attached, and I certainly apologize to anyone who was upset by it.” 

Throughout the panel, Gibson discussed his career with the event’s moderator, Liam Crowley, including his experience while making “Lethal Weapon” and “Mad Max.” He also talked about some of his future plans, which include directing the sequel to “The Passion of Christ,” called “The Resurrection of Christ.” The film will be split up into two parts: one coming out in theaters in May, 2027, and the second part coming out a year later.

Mel Gibson is no stranger to controversies. The American actor, 70, has had an up-and-down relationship with Hollywood due to his behavior. He’s starred in some of the major Hollywood productions, including “Braveheart,” which won five Oscars in 1997, including Best Actor for Gibson.

In 2006, he was charged with a DUI, with the incident going viral after he made some antisemitic comments.

In 2010, recordings of a phone conversation with a girlfriend prompted more problems, with him using racist, violent, and antisemitic language. 

He’s spent some time without working following his comments. In recent years, he’s starred in numerous films and TV shows, including “Hunting Season,” “Father Stu,” and more.
