In this role, Appio will lead the strategy, economics, evolution, and growth of the company’s video and entertainment portfolio. His focus will be on transforming video from a traditional standalone product into a broader entertainment platform that enhances the value of our connectivity, mobile, and value-added services.
“Joe brings a wealth of industry experience and a deep understanding of the evolving video and entertainment landscape,” said Toni Murphy, Executive Vice President of Operations at Mediacom Communications. “His leadership will be instrumental in advancing our strategy, strengthening the value of our product offerings, and positioning Mediacom for continued growth in an increasingly competitive marketplace.”
Appio began his career in the cable industry with United Artists Cable Systems Corporation, overseeing cable system operations across seven states, before joining US Cable in 1993. He subsequently served as Vice President of Operations and became US Cable Group’s first Chief Operating Officer, helping drive strategic growth and operational improvements.
Earlier in his career, Appio pioneered the transport of broadcast video signals over metropolitan fiber networks. Following the 1993 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, he volunteered his technical expertise to help restore broadcasts for New York City’s four major local television stations. He also served as a telecommunications consultant for the U.S. Air Force in Germany.
Appio joined Mediacom in 2013 and has played a key role in programming contract negotiations, in-home video technology, IP streaming, and next-generation product development.
“I’m excited to take on this new role and help shape the future of Mediacom’s video and entertainment offerings,” said Appio. “As the industry continues to evolve, we have an opportunity to rethink how we deliver entertainment to our customers and build on the strength of our connectivity and mobile services to create greater value for the households we serve.”
Appio’s contributions to the cable industry were recognized in 2025 when he was inducted into the Cable TV Pioneers. He has also served in leadership roles with telecommunications associations and community organizations, reflecting his longstanding commitment to both the industry and the communities it serves.
