Following the recently announced live-action film adaptation of MASHLE: MAGIC AND MUSCLES, Mackenyu has been revealed as protagonist Mash Burnedead, with Yuichi Fukuda directing the film. It is set to premiere in Japan on March 19, 2027. Mackenyu’s most recent role is Roronoa Zoro in the ONE PIECE live-action adaptation.

A teaser visual and new teaser video were also released. The footage shows Mackenyu as Mash receiving the fake facial mark used to conceal his inability to use magic, along with a scene of him performing bench presses.

Mackenyu said he spent around three years preparing physically for the role after receiving the offer. He also described the challenge of portraying Mash, a character who rarely shows emotion, while conveying his personality through his extraordinary physical strength.

Fukuda, whose previous live-action manga adaptations include Gintama and Wotakoi: Love Is Hardfor Otaku, said he offered Mackenyu the role shortly after receiving approval for the project. He added that the film features what he considers his strongest possible cast, with many of the actors working with him for the first time.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Fuji Television are overseeing the production, with CREDEUS handling production and Toho distributing the film in Japan. CREDEUS has previously worked on live-action projects including Kingdom, Blue Lock and Kokuho.

Hajime Komoto writes and draws the Mashle manga, which has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since January 2020. VIZ licensed it in English, and you can also read it on MANGA Plus. The platform describes the story as:
This is a world of magic where magic is used for everything. But deep in the forest exists a young man who spends his time training and bulking up. He can’t use magic, but he enjoys a peaceful life with his father. But one day, his life is put in danger! Will his muscular body protect him from the magic users who are out to get him? Powerfully trained muscles crush magic as this abnormal magical fantasy begins!

The first season of Mashle: Magic and Muscles ended in June after running for 12 episodes. The second season also ran for 12 episodes in Winter 2024 and covered the Divine Visionary Selection Exam Arc. The next in the manga is the Tri-Magic-Athalon Divine Visionary Final Exam Arc, which is set to begin in January 2027 with Season 3.

The voice cast for the Mashle anime adaptation includes:

    • Chiaki Kobayashi as Mash Burnedead
    • Kaito Ishikawa as Lance Crown
    • Takuya Eguchi as Dot Barrett
    • Reiji Kawashima as Finn Ames
    • Reina Ueda as Lemon Irvine
    • Yuki Kaji as Rayne Ames
    • Yuichiro Umehara as Abel Walker
    • Hiroki Nanami as Abyss Razor
