It’s never been a better time to be an X-Men fan. Not only will the mighty mutants play a role in Avengers: Doomsdayand take center stage in the upcoming comic crossover DNX, but Marvel Studios is releasing an X-Menreboot in 2028. Once the cast was announced at D23, reactions were all over the board: some fans loved the choices and the fact that Thunderbolts*director Jake Schreierwould be helming the X-Men reboot, while others are locked in debate over whether Inde Navarretteis the right choice for Rogue. Those fans have missed a key point about the X-Menreboot: this franchisedeserves television spinoffs.

Unless fans have been living under a rock, they know Marvel Studios started launching live-action and television series to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021. Five years later, this has proven a mixed effort: some series like WandaVisionand Lokireceived critical acclaim for what they did with certain characters, while others serve as a cautionary tale. (Notice how nobody talks about Secret Invasion?) As a result, Marvel Studios plans to scale back on its television projects following VisionQuest, but that’s a bad idea, as television can help build up the mutant presence in the MCU.

Marvel Studios Has Proven the X-Men’s Story Can’t Be Confined To Movies

Two Marvel projects have shown that the X-Men’s presence can stretch far beyond movies. Ms. Marvelended with the reveal that Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) is a mutant, effectively setting the stage for more mutant characters to show up in the MCU. Spider-Man: Brand New Daytook a major leap forward by introducing Jean Grey (Sadie Sink) as its antagonist, making her the first X-Men character in the MCU. Brand New Dayalso gave the MCU’s citizens a reason to hate and fear mutants, as Jean’s psychic powers effectively held half the city hostage. Add in the fact that Damage Control has slowly been developing technology to hunt down mutants, and that’s a concept ripe to be explored in a television series.

There’s also the presence of Mister Sinister (Adam Driver) to consider. The mad scientist has been operating for centuries and is usually connected to another X-Men foe: the immortal warlord Apocalypse. A television series could expandon that history, building up Apocalypse as a threat that could match or even eclipse Thanos or Doctor Doom. On top of that, Sinister has a history with fan-favorite mutant Gambit. Given Gambit’s rise in popularity and his romantic relationship with Rogue, a Gambittelevision series could be the best way to bring the Ragin’ Cajun into the MCU.

The X-Men’s Comic History Lends Itself Perfectly to Television

Anyone who’s ever googled “X-Men” knows the mutant team has a 60-year history with different characters andteams. X-Factor is a government-sponsored mutant team, X-Force is a paramilitary unit that takes a more lethal approach to protecting mutant kind, and Excalibur’s battled mystical threats. All of those teams could carry their own television series, not to mention Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. If a television series explores how Christopher Abbott’sversion of Charles Xavier teaches a generation of mutants, it could be a series that eclipses young adult fare like HBO’s upcoming Harry Potterreboot.

Marvel’s biggest argument for a new X-Mentelevision series isX-Men ’97, which arguably remains one of Marvel Animation’s best projects. Not only has it expanded upon the story of X-Men: The Animated Series, but it’s also managed to juggle a large cast of characters while bringing iconic comic book storylines to life. That’s the energy that any X-Men project needs, and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feigehas hinted the MCU has similar plans in the works:

“Having 85, almost 90 years of comic book history, there’s so many stories yet to tell…We announced a very young, new cast for a property called X-Men the other day. And that’s great, because there’s been 10 great X-Men movies [but] there can be 100 more. There’s sagas, upon sagas, with these comics that haven’t been told yet. And that’s great because the stories that inspired me to want to make these kinds of movies haven’t been told yet.”

If Feige wants to pull off the “Mutant Saga,” then he, Schreier, and other creators should factor television into those plans. The X-Men have plenty of stories to tell, and the big screen might not be big enough for all of them.

X-Menpremieres in theaters on May 5, 2028. Stay tuned to Collider for updates.
