For Marvel fans who have enjoyed seeing their favorite heroes surface on the small screen, the past few years have been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. While Marvel superheroes headlining their own TV shows (animated or live-action) has always been a constant over the past few decades, there was an explosion of TV adventures within the past few years alone due to the arrival of the Disney Plus streaming service.

The Marvel Studios-produced MCU shows are largely responsible for that, as the likes of WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, Hawkeye, Agatha All Along, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, Daredevil: Born Again and more have made their presence felt since the launch of the Multiverse Saga. But those aren’t the only Marvel projects on the platform, with the likes of back catalog ABC shows such as Agent Carter and Agents of SHIELD being available to rewatch there, as well as fan-favorite preschool animated series Spidey And His Amazing Friends.

Unfortunately, it seems as if a relatively new Marvel show won’t be back for another season.

Iron Man and his Awesome Friends won’t return for a second season

The adventures are over for Iron Man and his Awesome Friends. The preschool animated series wrapped up its single season of 40 episodes on July 17, with co-executive producer James Eason-Garcia taking to social mediato confirm that the show would be ending in its current iteration. Although the reasoning behind the one-and-done approach isn’t clear, the likely reason is down to the fact that Disney is rebranding the project into an Avengers series instead, with Marvel’s Avengers: Mightiest Friends set to arrive on both Disney Jr. and Disney Plus in 2027.

While the idea of a bigger team-up series is incredibly exciting, fans have been left deflated – and downright confused – by the decision to scrap Iron Man after just one season. The show is a spinoff of the immensely successful Spidey and his Amazing Friends– which is officially the most-watched Marvel TV series on the Disney Plus platform and has earned itself a record seventh-season renewal.

Like Spidey, Iron Man and his Awesome Friends saw a young Tony Stark (a.k.a. Iron Man himself) team with two other young heroes that had similar talents to him; in Tony’s case, that is Riri Williams (a.k.a. Ironheart), and Amadeus Cho (Iron Hulk). The trio get the chance to showcase those talents throughout the show, developing technologically-advanced super suits to stop bad guys and save the day in brief-but-entertaining episodic adventures.

Iron Man and Spidey crossed over for a special episode in October 2025 – aptly titled Spidey and Iron Man: Avengers Team Up! – which saw the pair of Marvel legends take on the team of Green Goblin and Ultron, who both attempted to take over the city’s devices. This is the first of two crossover specials, with the next one – Spidey and the Avengers: Halloween Team-Up! – coming on September 24.

Iron Man returns in Avengers: Mightiest Friends

With that in mind, Iron Man’s preschool adventures are far from over. While it’s unclear why Marvel and Disney opted to rebrand Iron Man and his Awesome Friends to Marvel’s Avengers: Mightiest Friends considering that they were both announced as separate spinoffs of Spidey and his Amazing Friends, the good news is that the cast, creative team, and continuity of the show will migrate to its rebranded Avengers offshoot.

Young Tony Stark will now be joined by the likes of Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Black Panther, and the Hulk as part of the new Mightiest Friends line-up. As this year’s Halloween Special makes clear, there will be plenty of room to cross this series over with Spidey down the line and perhaps to even further build out the Friends shared universe of superheroes.

Let’s just hope we get to see Riri and Amadeus down the line too, because they deserve to be a part of the Avengers spinoff’s roster. If the sequel series runs longer than Iron Man and his Awesome Friends does, perhaps that will come to fruition.

Marvel’s Avengers: Mightiest Friends arrives on Disney Jr. and Disney Plus in 2027.
