Marvel Meets 'Star Wars': Kevin Smith and David Marquez Set to Write and Illustrate the Blockbuster Crossover Series

A Marvel adventure in a galaxy far, far away is officially in the making. While crossovers for Marvel are very commonplace, with the comics franchise collaborating with the likes of DC, Star Trek, and even Archie Comics, Star Wars has largely steered clear of venturing into that territory. But for the first time in history, the comic book franchise has taken on an official crossover prospect.

Star Wars and Marvel are now all set for an epic crossover written by Kevin Smith and illustrated by David Marquez.

Star Wars galaxy set to collide with Marvel’s multiverse

Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, a five-issue special event series to commemorate Star Wars’ 50th anniversary, has been confirmed by Marvel Comics. Luke Skywalker, Captain America, Han Solo, Spider-Man, Chewbacca, the Hulk, Doctor Doom, and Darth Vader are just a few of the characters that EW reveals will be a longtime director, comic book writer, and Star Wars enthusiast

Smith will collaborate with artist David Marquez of Uncanny X-Men and Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man on the series. January 2027 will see the release of the first issue, and subsequent installments will be released each month after that. May 2027 will see the release of the fifth and last issue.

According to a logline, Hope Assembles will firmly establish the Star Wars brand in Marvel’s 616 universe while Earth’s Mightiest Heroes witness the events of A New Hope take place on Earth and in front of their eyes following a spell that shatters reality. The full meaning of that is still unknown, but the battle lines are already being formed, with the Avengers joining the Rebel Alliance and all of Marvel’s villains joining the Empire, per EW’s exclusive.

The year 2027 is really special for the Star Wars franchise, and this is not just because of the crossover with Marvel

Star Wars celebrating its 50-year milestone

In addition to the first-ever Marvel/Star Wars crossover, the Star Wars series will commemorate a significant milestone in 2027. 2027 will be the 50th anniversary of the release of the first Star Wars film, which has subsequently been renamed Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. With a box office total of $775 million against a $11 million budget, A New Hope remains one of the highest-grossing films of all time although it was released back in 1977.

Star Wars made an incredible $4.2 billion at the box office in 1977 after taking inflation into account. Talking about Marvel and its crossovers, this is Marvel’s most recent cross-brand mash-up. Last year’s Batman/Deadpool and this year’s Superman/Spider-Man marked the beginning of a new crossover series with DC. Apart from this, Marvel is looking pretty golden on the movie front with Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s massive box office success.
