Makoto Shinkai’s next anime film has found its global distributor, with Crunchyroll securing worldwide rights outside Asia, except for India, where the company will also handle the release. Sony Pictures Entertainment will once again co-distribute the film alongside Crunchyroll.
The announcement confirms the distribution plans for Shinkai’s next feature, although its title, story, and release date are under wraps.
The partnership continues the companies’ previous collaboration on Suzume, which earned more than $300 million at the global box office following its 2023 release. The film also received widespread critical acclaim, including a Golden Globe nomination, and premiered in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival, becoming one of the few anime features to do so in decades.
Shinkai’s earlier films have also enjoyed major commercial and critical success. Your Name. became one of the highest-grossing anime films of all time after its 2016 release, while Weathering With You served as Japan’s official submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
Shinkai confirmed in December 2025 that he had already begun work on a new project.
“Right now, I’m working on a new film. By the time my next film is finished and released, I hope to visit India again…” he said.
