Dominik Szoboszlai is feeling good about Liverpool’s chances. The Hungarian midfielder, fresh off winning the club’s Player of the Season award for 2025-26, says the squad has rediscovered its intensity under new head coach Andoni Iraola, who officially took the job on June 4, 2026. The digital asset markets tied to Liverpool, however, did not get the memo.
When the pitch and the blockchain don’t agree
Fan tokens branded as $LFC are currently trading below $0.00002, with total market caps sitting under $15,000. That is not a rounding error. That is roughly the cost of a used car, distributed across an entire token’s market capitalization.
Szoboszlai’s Sorare player cards, which are blockchain-based digital collectibles that track real-world performance, are changing hands for low single-digit dollar amounts on average. The man just won Player of the Season, and his digital representation is worth less than a cup of coffee at most London cafes.
Liverpool’s LFC Heroes Club NFT collection, which launched on the Polygon blockchain in March 2022 with a target of more than £8.5 million in primary sales, is now seeing subdued secondary market activity.
The fan token thesis, four years later
The stagnation in Liverpool’s digital asset ecosystem reflects a broader cooling across sports-linked tokens and NFTs that accelerated through 2024 and into 2026. Investors who positioned around team-specific narratives, new signings, managerial buzz, or trophy runs found that these catalysts either never triggered price action or triggered it so briefly that timing the exit was nearly impossible.
The Sorare platform built a genuinely clever product: fantasy football, but with NFT player cards that have real scarcity and trade on a secondary market. During the NFT bull run, top-tier cards for elite players were selling for thousands of dollars. By 2026, even a Player of the Season like Szoboszlai commands only a few dollars per card on average.
What this means for investors still holding
If you are holding $LFC tokens or sitting on a Heroes Club NFT, Szoboszlai’s good vibes under Iraola are not going to rescue the position. The market for these assets has decoupled from club performance almost entirely. What actually drives pricing in this corner of the market now is broader NFT sentiment, platform-level activity on Polygon and Sorare, and general risk appetite across crypto, not whether Liverpool finishes in the top four.
A $15,000 market cap means there are essentially no institutional participants. Liquidity is so low that even modest buying pressure moves prices dramatically, and equally modest selling pressure collapses them.
For investors thinking about sports-linked crypto assets more broadly, the Liverpool case suggests a few things worth watching. First, platform metrics matter more than team metrics. Sorare’s total trading volume, monthly active users, and card issuance rates are better leading indicators than whether Szoboszlai has a good Champions League group stage. Second, the NFT collections that retain any meaningful value tend to be ones with genuine scarcity enforced at the contract level, not just limited initial supply that can be diluted by future drops. Third, managerial changes and pre-season optimism are not catalysts for these assets, even when the optimism is genuine.
