Cyberpunk 2077 is the latest video game reportedly making the leap to the big screen
On October 8, Deadline and Variety both reported that a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film was in the works. Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is connected to the in-development project. Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 studio CD Projekt Red is also involved and will help produce the upcoming project, which is still very early in development.
No story details or information on casting, writers, or directors was shared by either outlet.
“We’re excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise. We look forward to sharing more details at the appropriate time,” said CDPR’s joint CEO Michał Nowakowski on Twitter.
Cyberpunk 2077 has been a massive hit for CD Projekt Red. Following a rough launch in 2020, the first-person sci-fi open-world RPG has received numerous free updates as well as a massive paid DLC in the form of 2023’s Phantom Liberty. Cyberpunk 2077, which features Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand, has sold over 40 million copies worldwide.A sequel from CD Projekt Red is in the works.
This is just one more video game movie adaptation to toss on the pile. Over the last few years, video games have become big business in Hollywood. TV shows like Fallout and The Last of Ushave been mega hits for Amazon and HBO, respectively. Meanwhile, movies like Sonic, Minecraft,Super Mario, and the recently releasedResident Evil have proved that the era of video game movies being flops that nobody likes is well and truly over. Now Hollywood is desperate to turn every big game into a movie, including stuff like Arc Raiders.
For Paramount, this news comes shortly after the company officially merged with Warner Bros. to create the new company Skydance, led by rich failson and terrible actor David Ellison. Bobby Kotick, former CEO of Activision, was recently named a member of the new company’s board.
