Sony paused some homebrew advancements with recent updates. Even so, many PlayStation consoles just became more versatile. The new pLinux5-NG project boots on systems using up to July’s 13.60 firmware, boosting Linux compatibility. While still in testing, it’s a promising development for playing PC games after PS5 jailbreaks.
The previous Linux bootloader worked on modified PS5 consoles having firmware versions 3.00–7.61. That meant gamers needed hardware not updated since August 2023. Now, they can experiment with the OS on any machine that has avoided revisions 14.00 and 14.10.
What the bootloader could lead to
On the pLinux5-NG GitHub page, developers confirmed the breakthrough. Social media posts already show homebrew enthusiasts loading distributions including Ubuntu and CachyOS. Nevertheless, it’s too early to tell if progress achieved by the older ps5-linux bootloader, like running PC games

The latest process requires PS5 jailbreaks installed on eligible consoles. Both the Relapse exploit and Byepervisor-Reborn are necessary to overcome Sony’s security protocols. The hacks have also generated controversy for being a pathway to pirating PS5 game backups.
If the transition to the new bootloader goes smoothly, it opens up a host of possibilities. Minus some drawbacks, users could transform their gaming systems into Linux PCs or Steam Machine alternatives. Many apps and programs become targets, but gamers, of course, have other priorities.
Surprisingly capable performance
When tested on PS5 jailbreaks using firmware 7.61 or earlier, initial results with Steam titles were encouraging. Valve’s Proton compatibility layer allowed Windows ports to run on PlayStation consoles. Despite VRAM limitations, PC games like GTA 5 Enhanced achieved close to 60 fps at 1440p. Ray tracing impressed, with Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered also performing well.
Linux may be out of reach for an extended time on updated consoles. Firmware 14.00 and 14.10, released in September and October, block the Relapse exploit and Reborn hypervisor bypass. PSN is also no longer accessible on version 13.60, as Sony now demands the latest software to log in.
