Comedian Lee Se-young has once again captured public attention by revealing bold cosplay fashion. Having previously shared her personal experiences with breast filler side effects and corrective surgery, she is now showcasing more proactive styling based on her changed body image and self-confidence, though public reactions to her choices remain divided.

This controversy transcends a mere celebrity‘s choice of clothing; it is interpreted as a symbolic case reflecting how social standards regarding women’s body image, freedom of self-expression, and the ‘visible body’ in popular culture are evolving in modern society.

On the 15th, Lee released several photosplay.” She continued her characteristic friendly communication with fans by hosting an event to guess the character’s name, offering chicken as a prize to those who answered correctly

In the released photos, Lee wore a character costume paired with long, twin-tailed hair in pink and lime green. She wore a white gown over black clothing, utilizing various props to bring the character’s features to life.

In particular, the deeply plunging neckline of the top drew significant attention. Expressing her personal style through the outfit that emphasized her bust line, Lee shared her confident appearance through mirror selfies.

This connects to her previous cosplay content. Recently, Lee has been actively communicating with fans by attempting character transformations in outfits that emphasize her body lines.

However, views on these actions are split.

Some netizens raised concerns, stating, “Since this is content released to the public, there is a need to control the level of exposure.” On the other hand, other netizens argued that “how one expresses their own body is a personal choice,” suggesting that Lee’s right to self-determination should be respected.

This debate aligns with the ongoing conflict between ‘body autonomy’ and ‘public image management’ that frequently appears in the realm of modern popular culture.

While a celebrity’s appearance in the past was akin to a product image managed by agencies and broadcasting systems, the SNS era has ushered in an era of ‘self-branding,’ where stars personally direct and consume their own bodies and identities. The process of revealing one’s changes, turning complexes into narratives, and converting them into content has itself become a cultural phenomenon.

Lee is an individual who has actively shared her physical transformation process rather than hiding it.

Through YouTube content in the past, she candidly revealed the side effects she experienced after breast filler procedures. At the time, she disclosed that after experiencing impact during exercise, the filler moved from its normal position toward her ribs and armpit area.

Describing her changed appearance at the time, Lee expressed her psychological distress, saying it “looked like I had four breasts.” Although she later underwent filler removal, it did not return to the desired shape, eventually leading her to choose corrective surgery.

Following the surgery, she expressed her newfound confidence, saying, “I am now able to wear V-necks or bold clothes that I couldn’t wear before.”

However, based on her experience, Lee did not unconditionally recommend plastic surgery. She emphasized, “Having small breasts does not mean you must absolutely have surgery,” adding, “Since it is a larger surgery than one might think, a cautious decision is required.”

This is also linked to the spreading discourse on ‘appearance improvement.’ While plastic surgery was once considered a personal choice to be hidden, an atmosphere is forming where it is accepted as a way to reconstruct one’s identity and image. At the same time, however, critical views regarding lookism and the commodification of the body coexist.

This ambivalent perspective acts even more strongly in the case of female celebrities. While the public expects self-management and transformed beauty on one hand, they often exhibit a dual attitude by applying strict standards to exposure and bodily expression on the other.

Lee’s actions are situated within this complex landscape of modern popular culture. While she is building a new image by converting her complexes and transformation process into a public narrative, she is simultaneously subject to constant evaluation and censorship due to her status as a celebrity.

Lee has previously revealed that she invested approximately 100 million won in procedures and surgeries related to her eyelids, nose, and breasts. Along with the confidence gained from her experience, she also conveys the message that self-satisfaction and careful judgment are more important than external changes.

Ultimately, this cosplay controversy leaves behind a socio-cultural question regarding how individuals in the SNS era interpret and express their bodies and images, and to what extent the public can judge the choices of others.
