Just because Kristen Bell is smiling on the red carpet doesn’t mean her personal life is always sunshine and rainbows.
The Nobody Wants This star continued her candid streak while discussing the challenges of marriage and raising two kids in the public eye during a recent interview.
“It’s hard. Do not think because I am on your television that it is easy for me,” Bell bluntly told Bustle. “It’s brutal. I cry weekly.”
Bell shares two daughters with her husband of 13 years, Dax Shepard, and is no stranger to speaking honestly aboutthe rocky times that the couple have endured. During the interview, she noted that it feels especially important to open up about those difficulties as a public figure, so other people see their own struggles reflected back at them.
“Oftentimes when you’re in that cyclone of puberty, you could think, My kid is the only one doing this,” Bell pointed out. “And that is just simply not a fact.”

For his part, Shepard praised his wife for her strength in their relationship, sharing that he knew early on that she would be “a force of nature to be reckoned with.” He said that he has since been proven correct, joking, “She’s not afraid of the gorilla she lives with.”
Bell and Shepard have been together since 2007. The couple tied the knot in 2013 after waiting for California to pass same-sex marriage into law, in solidarity with LGBTQ couples who had previously been denied the right to marry. The actors are parents to daughters Lincoln, 13, and Delta, 11.
Bell noted that when it comes to booking future gigs, she takes care to put her family first.
“Is this going to pull me away from my kids too much? Will I still be able to be the mom that I want to be? That’s really the No. 1, to be honest. There’s nothing higher than that,” she said. “I would easily let my whole career and all its legacy and notoriety ‘disapparate’ tomorrow if it meant sacrificing something major in my kids’ lives, or not being there.”
As for the struggles Bell and Shepard have endured, the couple regularly open up about their past in interviews and on Shepard’s Armchair Expertpodcast. They have spoken about issues including their brief breakup, which came shortly before they were engaged, and reacting to one another performing intimate sceneswith other actors.

Last October, the couplefaced backlash for a controversial anniversary post in which Bell recounted Shepard saying to her, “I would never kill you. A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I’m heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would.”

The post was met with ire from social media users who labeled the post “tone deaf” and “insensitive” toward victims of domestic violence. Reacting to the pushback just days later, Bell affirmed her deep commitment to her partner of nearly 20 years: “Sometimes it’s gonna ebb and sometimes it’s gonna flow, but we’re not gonna have checks and balances because we’re gonna realize it’s not me against you, it’s us against the world.”
