Konami’s President Says AI Won’t Change the Game Industry as Much as You Think

While much of the game industry treats generative AI as the tool that will finally throw open the doors of development, Konami’s president is not convinced it will significantly change the market.

Hideki Hayakawa, representative director and president of Konami Digital <a href="https://comicvibe.com/obt-sports-entertainment-announces-partnership-with-world-champion-gukesh/” title=”OBT Sports & Entertainment announces partnership with world champion Gukesh”>Entertainment, made his position formal in Konami’s Integrated Report for the fiscal year ending March 2026. His argument cuts against prevailing enthusiasm: easier production tools do not automatically produce more innovative or more entertaining games.

Development Access Isn’t the Problem AI Is Solving

Hayakawa contends that general-purpose game engines and user-generated content platforms already lowered the barriers that AI is now credited with removing.

That context anchors his reasoning. Development access had already expanded significantly before generative AI entered the conversation, through widely available engines and platforms that let players build and share their own content.

His position is that the case for AI as a democratizing force arrives late to a market that has already shifted. Greater ease of production, in his view, does not by itself create more demand or more original games.

What AI Can’t Replicate in a Development Studio

Hayakawa draws a clear line between faster production pipelines and the creative friction that produces something worth playing.

Even if AI use does lead to improvements in production efficiency, I believe that the most important factors in producing entertaining and innovative video games are people and creators.

Hideki Hayakawa, Representative Director and President, Konami Digital Entertainment

Speed of production and quality of ideas are not the same thing, though the industry often treats them as if they are. Generating the judgment calls, the tonal decisions, and the design instincts that make a game feel original is a different challenge from automating routine tasks.

Hayakawa describes what diverse creative teams produce as a kind of irreducible exchange. “That kind of chemical reaction is not something that can be easily replaced,” he says in the report, referring to the interaction among developers with different backgrounds and perspectives.

The analogy holds up on inspection: a production pipeline can be optimized, but the unexpected collision of two opposing creative instincts is harder to schedule.

Konami Is Still Exploring AI, Just Carefully

The company’s stance reflects structured caution rather than outright resistance to new technology.

Konami says it provides systematic support so creators can learn emerging tools, assess their risks, and apply them safely in game development. That approach places the company closer to controlled experimentation than to either wholesale adoption or avoidance.

The optimistic case for AI in game development exists independently of Hayakawa’s position. Proponents point to lower production costs, faster iteration, and smaller teams capable of shipping more. Hayakawa’s reported counterargument is that a greater supply of easier-to-produce games does not automatically generate more demand or more meaningful innovation.

AI as Background Tool, Not Creative Replacement

For anyone playing Konami’s next release, the practical implication of Hayakawa’s position is fairly direct.

AI is more likely to shape what happens in pipelines and workflows than to replace the human teams responsible for design decisions. Hayakawa’s comments indicate that Konami intends to treat the technology as an aid to its creators rather than a substitute for them.
