KochiKame is officially returning with a brand-new anime series, New KochiKame, set to premiere in 2027. This is the franchise’s first full television anime since the original series ended its run in Japan in 2004.
Alongside the announcement, the production team released the first promotional video featuring the new voice cast, and details about the staff behind the revival. You can watch the first trailer below:
The new Japanese cast includes Fukushi Ochiai as the famously chaotic police officer Kankichi Ryotsu, Shouta Aoi as Keiichi Nakagawa, M.A.O as Reiko Akimoto, and Raiko Sakamoto as Daijiro Ohara.
The series is based on Osamu Akimoto’s long-running manga, which followed the daily antics of Ryotsu and his colleagues at a neighbourhood police station in Tokyo. Known for its slapstick comedy, bizarre inventions, and topical humour, KochiKame became one of Japan’s longest-running manga and anime franchises.
Original creator Osamu Akimoto welcomed the anime’s return, saying, “The artwork has evolved to suit the modern era, but the visuals are as impactful and entertaining as ever. I am excited to see what kind of incidents will happen this time.”
Director Akitaro Daichi also shared a message for fans, saying Ryotsu’s boundless energy was one of the biggest reasons the team was excited to bring the series back.
“I am genuinely impressed by Ryo-san’s vitality, and all of us on the staff are delighted that his return gives us the chance to bring out an anime that can energize Japan once again,” Daichi said. “It is simply funny, and we are laughing ourselves as we make it. I hope everyone can relax, enjoy an easy laugh, and come away feeling energized. Please look forward to it.”
KochiKame carries a special place in anime history for Indian fans. The series aired on Hungama TV with a Hindi dub, and its catchy Hindi opening theme remains one of the most recognisable anime songs for an entire generation of viewers. While there is no word yet on an Indian release or an official Hindi dub for New KochiKame, many fans will be hoping the revival eventually makes its way here, ideally with the return of the beloved Hindi voice cast.
