The wait for Kalki 2898 AD Part 2 is finally getting a little easier. Director Nag Ashwin has shared a major update on the sequel, revealing when the film will enter its regular shooting schedule and when the team expects to finish filming.
Ashwin recently confirmed that regular shooting for the sequel will begin in October 2026. The director expects the shoot to be over by mid-2027.
For fans who have been waiting since the first film ended, the timeline marks an important step forward for the ambitious sci-fi franchise.
Kalki 2898 AD Part 2 shoot begins next month
Ashwin said the production is now moving towards a more regular shooting phase.
“We’re starting the shoot regularly from next month and, hopefully, it should be done with the shoot by mid next year,” he told India Today.
The filmmaker did not reveal further details about the shooting schedule or the sequel’s release date.
The update arrives shortly after the first Kalki 2898 AD received two honours at the 72nd National Film Awards, held on September 22. Ashwin described the recognition as a positive boost for the team.
Nag Ashwin says audience response mattered most
While the National Awards have added another milestone to the film’s journey, Ashwin said the response from viewers remains one of the biggest validations for the project.
Looking back, he recalled the long process of taking the film from an idea on paper to the screen.
“I think it’s the long journey of making the film from a blank piece of paper to what it turned out on screen on the first day of release. And the fact that it connected with the whole country and so many parts of the world, I think it’s the journey that first comes to mind,” he said.
For Ashwin, the reaction did not end with the film’s theatrical run. He said people, including children, continue to ask him about the sequel.
“I think the box office result was a validation. And kids coming up to me even two years after the release and saying they are eagerly waiting for Part 2 is the validation,” he said.
He added that the National Award was “definitely a good energy boost” for the team to continue working in the same direction.

According to Ashwin, accessibility was an important part of how he approached the first film.
“I approached the film as a mainstream entertainer. I didn’t want to make it for a niche audience,” he said.
He explained that he wanted the story to reach as many kinds of viewers as possible because he believed it deserved to travel widely.
Kalki 2898 AD stars Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Kamal Haasan and Dulquer Salmaan in key roles.
