New Japan-first Marvel manga will reinterpret Spider-Man, Daredevil, Punisher, and Spider-Gwen with original settings and localized narrative.

    Highlights

    • Marvel and KADOKAWA have announced a new manga publishing partnership, launching five original volumes.
    • The new lineup introduces localized Marvel heroes, including Spider-Man, Daredevil, and a yakuza-inspired Punisher.
    • The collaboration arrives as Marvel’s publishing partnership with Shueisha winds down.

Marvel has entered a new publishing partnership with KADOKAWA to produce five original manga volumes featuring some of its best-known superheroes, including Spider-Man and Punisher. The collaboration was unveiled during the Marvel Fanfare panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

The initial lineup includes new manga centered on Spider-Man, Daredevil, The Punisher, and Spider-Gwen (Gwen Stacy). Following the announcement, artist tokitokoro confirmed in an X post dated July 26 that they are drawing Spider-Man, along with the Japanese reimagination of Punisher and Daredevil.

tokitokoro is known for the boys’ love title River in Me; she also worked on previous Marvel-adjacent work, including Jeff the Land Shark and Marvel Rivals tie-in art. They stated that serialization will start in 2026. Bleeding Cool also reported that Marvel Manga will launch in 2026 with KADOKAWA; however, specific dates for individual serialization were not revealed.

Editors from KADOKAWA appeared alongside outgoing Marvel’s former Editor-in-Chief, C.B. Cebulski, at the event. Cebulski is transitioning into a newly created role as editor of Marvel’s Asia Originals line in Tokyo, headlining the upcoming manga volumes.

How Do the Localized Spider-Man, Punisher, and Other Marvel Heroes Look Like?

The Marvel Manga initiative is an effort to create localized stories that resonate with Japanese readers while preserving Marvel’s core superhero identity. Cebulski’s announcement at San Diego Comic-Con did not include substantial plot details; however, it unveiled the character art of the four announced characters.

The flagship title, Spider-Man of Shibuya, follows a high school student from Tokyo’s Shibuya district who inherits Spider-Man’s powers. The manga will shift the familiar Spidey narrative from New York to one of Japan’s busiest urban centers.

Marvel also revealed a Shinjuku-based Daredevil, whose redesigned appearance replaces the classic horned cowl with an oni-inspired mask. The oni mask is rooted in Japanesefolklore and often represents a guardian who protects people from evil. tokitokoro’s illustrations also do feature his courtroom outfit, a tailored formal suit, along with his new hero suit and casual clothing.

Punisher appears redrawn as a yakuza figure, a shift that makes the vigilante more relatable for Japan’s readers. The Japanese Punisher also wore a katana instead of his signature firearms, with his signature skull motif featured at the back of his cape, instead of upon his bulletproof vest.

The next announced project stars Spider-Gwen. Yamada’s promotional artwork preserves Spider-Gwen’s recognizable costume, while the other looks embrace a manga-inspired art style and fashion aesthetics.

The KADOKAWA alliance marks a notable shift in Marvel’s manga strategy in the country following Shueisha’s decision to discontinue its Marvel manga publishing
partnership on July 1. Shueisha will end its physical sales and digital distribution of existing Marvel manga by Sep 30, 2026.

Rather than extending previous manga based on Marvel characters, the Marvel x KADOKAWA partnership will bring new series, offering readers fresh narratives based on current popular characters. The announcement also lands roughly five days before the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which features Punisher (Jon Bernthal) alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
