Online Creating Comics Course with Spider-man artist Neil Edwards
Neil Edwards, New York Times bestselling artist for Marvel, DC, 2000AD, and more, is to share tips on his craft and career lessons that matter most during an eight week online Comic Book Artist Course run by Elvtr, starting next month.
The course, which includes workshops and a variety of assignments, offers the opportunity to build polished portfolio pages while learning the skills publishers and clients look for in comic artists; and design compelling characters and worlds.
Illustrating his first professional work for Marvel in 1996, before becoming a freelance artist and later a Marvel exclusive illustrator, Neil Edwards has built a decades-long career as an artist. In addition to his illustration and storyboard work for a wide variety of licensed entertainment franchises across global audiences, his many credits span a huge range of comics titles and characters, including Rogue Trooper for 2000AD, Marvel’s Fantastic Four, The Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers, DC’s Justice League, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and Suicide Squad.
Not forgetting, of course, his extensive work on the Doctor Who and Assassin’s Creed seriesfor Titan Comics, or, my personal favourite, his marvellous art on Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies for B7 Media, #4 currently in the works. (As the writer of that strip, I admit I’m biased!).
This upcoming course, which you can apply to join here, is ideal for artists, designers and writers, too, offering tips on the fundamentals of visual storytelling, narrative flow, page direction, and world consistency; how to think like a director on the page through story-focused exercises, and, for writers, understand an artist’s process, so you’ll sharpen your own and become a stronger collaborator. Essentially, learn how to create sequential art that moves, breathes, and keeps readers hooked!

John is the founder of downthetubes, launched in 1998. He is a comics and magazine editor, writer, and Press Officer for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He also runs Crucible Comic Press.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who MagazineandOverkill for Marvel UK, Babylon 5 Magazine, Star Trek Magazine, and its successor, Star Trek Explorer, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics; and has edited several comic collections and graphic novels, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”, and Hancock: The Lad Himself, by Stephen Walsh and Keith Page.
He’s the writer of comics such as Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs”, with Dave Hailwood.
