Jessica Lange is opening up about her future.
The 77-year-old discussed her career and what she hopes to accomplish next during an interview with Rolling Stone published Friday. When asked about what roles she’d like to tackle going forward, Lange gave a surprising answer.
“I actually feel like I’m coming to an end,” she said. “And maybe it’s not a bad way to end, you know, the last film being Long Day’s Journey Into Nightand playing Mary Tyrone.”
With a career spanning five decades, Lange has found major success, picking up two Oscars, five Golden Globe Awards, three Emmys, and a Tony. With achievements like that, it may come as no surprise that she’d want to rest on her laurels.
Still, she said there have been a few projects that “have been in the works forever” that she would love to complete. In particular, Lange is keen to do a film about Marlene Dietrich‘s later career, noting that she would explore similar themes as she did in Feud: Bette and Joan, which tackled the rivalry, sexism, and ageism afflicting Bette Davis and Joan Crawford (she was Joan).
“We touched on this with Ryan [Murphy]’s project Feud with Joan and Bette about what happens when an actress gets to a certain age and they’re no longere and Joan. That is a recurrent theme for a lot of women, especially of that period, and in this case, it’s Dietrich and what she did, where she moved on from when Hollywood was kind of finished with her.”
Although she said “it’s a fascinating story,” the King Kong actress has struggled to get the project made. She admitted that it’s difficult to get movies off the ground these days, at least the ones that interest her.

While Long Day’s Journey Into Nightwas her last film role, Lange most recently starred in the latest season of American Horror Story, reprising her four iconic characters in the anthology series. In fact, she told creator Ryan Murphy that replaying these roles was a strict condition for her return.
“Ryan Murphy talked me into coming back,” Lange said on Live with Kelly and Mark in September. “First, he talked to me about playing [season 1’s] Constance, which I think was his favorite character that I did. But I said I’ll come back if I can do all four characters.”

Lange previously teased that she would “start phasing out of filmmaking” because the current landscape felt less creative and more profit- driven.
“The emphasis becomes not on the art or the artist or the storytelling. It becomes about satisfying your stockholders,” she said in 2023. “It diminishes the artist and the art of filmmaking.”
