When people approach her, Ortega always recalls what she was taught at Disney, she said.
Jenna Ortega is redefining her boundaries.
The former child star explained Thursday on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that she went without them for a while.
“When I was young, and I was on Disney Channel, they took us to media training, right?” Ortega explained to host Josh Horowitz. “And they told us, you know, ‘Every time someone meets you, it’s probably the only time they’re ever going to interact with you, like that’s a very special moment in their lives. So just be aware of that.'”
TheWednesday star joked that was, “No pressure!”
“That has never left me,” Ortega said. “And sometimes I try to give myself grace, and I’m trying to have better boundaries.”

The way that plays out in the real world is that she’s not as open to meeting everyone in all circumstances, which makes perfect sense.
“So maybe if I feel like it’s not so safe of a situation or maybe I don’t want to stop and agree to take a photo with a random grown man,” Ortega said. ” Kids and things like that, of course. It is a lot though. And, again, it’s sweet. Some of the interactions are so sweet, and then some of them are a little bit more embarrassing or aggressive or mean. And it’s hard to know what the balance is. But you just… I do what I can.”
The Scream franchise alum’s early work included a starring role on the Disney Channel sitcom Stuck in the Middle, on which she played Harley Diaz for three seasons between 2016 and 2018. Her character was a tween with older and younger siblings.
Ortega also provided the voice of the character Princess Isabel on Disney’s animated series Elena of Avalor. She popped up on the cartoon Big City Greens, too.
Now 24, Ortega is known for her role as Gomez and Morticia Addams’ daughter on the Netflix series Wednesday, and also for her work in the Scream franchise and for playing Astrid Deetz, the daughter of Winona Ryder’s Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Her new movie is Taika Waititi’s Klara and the Sun, which opened Friday.
She explained toVogue earlier this week that she’s quietly struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder since she was 7, two years before she began acting. Ortega recounted having repeated a specific routine each morning before going to school.

“I had to open the bedsheet a certain way, and open the drawer one way, and brush my hair in a slow-paced way,” she said.
Ortega uses therapy, medication, and acting to cope. She noted that it’s helpful to channel all her energy into her work.
“You have to breathe [when the cameras are rolling],” she said. “That’s another reason why I like my job.”
