Jason Sanjay is set to take his first step into filmmaking with Sigma, but the young director is well aware that his family name will inevitably be part of the conversation. As the son of actor and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, Jason knows that audiences may enter the theatre with certain expectations even before seeing his work.
Jason Sanjay on creating his own identity
In a conversation with Galatta Plus, Jason was asked whether audiences would view him primarily as Vijay’s son, the Chief Minister’s son or as a filmmaker attempting to build his own identity.
Jason admitted that the question is something he thinks about regularly. He acknowledged that his family legacy will remain a permanent part of his journey, particularly given the public attention surrounding his family.
At the same time, he hopes Sigma will allow audiences to eventually look beyond his surname and focus on his work.
“I am doing my own film in my small bubble, making my mark in the industry and delivering my vision,” Jason said.
According to him, the film itself will ultimately determine how audiences perceive him. He explained that once viewers get into the film, the focus would shift from his background to his work as a director.
“Basically, after five minutes of watching the movie, it’ll only be like, ‘Directed by Jason Sanjay,’” he said.
Jason added that both praise and criticism would be part of the process, but believes the film will ultimately communicate who he is as a filmmaker.
“Whatever the criticism I get, positive or negative, the work will speak who I am,” he said.
For Jason, Sigma is therefore not just a debut but the starting point for building a career on his own terms. He hopes the film’s success and exposure will give him the opportunity to establish a distinct identity in the industry and continue making films.
Jason Sanjay wants to showcase Vijay’s lighter side
Jason also spoke about the possibility of directing his father Vijay someday. Rather than focusing on the larger-than-life image audiences are familiar with, he said he would be interested in exploring his father’s humour and more relaxed personality.
“I like my father’s sense of humour, something that I really enjoy watching him do, letting loose and being himself,” Jason said.
Having grown up observing Vijay away from his public image, Jason feels there is a playful, almost “inner-child-like” side to the actor that could be explored on screen.
He believes Vijay has increasingly moved away from roles that allow him to simply be a relatable character. If given the opportunity, Jason said he would like to bring that more natural and humorous side of his father to the screen.
All eyes on Jason Sanjay’s directorial debut
Starring Sundeep Kishan and Faria Abdullah in the lead roles, Sigma marks Jason Sanjay’s debut as a director. The film is scheduled to release on October 2.
For Jason, the film represents the first opportunity to move from being known primarily through his family to being recognised for his own creative voice.
