Sagar Pictures Entertainment has announced the beginning of its cinematic journey into the world of the Shrimad Bhagavatam. The studio is developing the sacred text as a seven-film theatrical saga, with further updates on Part I expected in the coming months.
The announcement holds added significance for the studio as September 4, 2026 marks Krishna Janma under the traditional celestial combination of Krishna Paksha Ashtami, Rohini Nakshatra and the Moon in Vrishabha.

For centuries, the Shrimad Bhagavatam, also known as the Bhagavata Mahapurana, has remained one of the major sacred texts through which the life, teachings and divine nature of Lord Krishna have been understood.
The story follows Krishna from his birth to Devaki and Vasudeva in Mathura to his childhood in Gokul under Yashoda and Nanda, his life in Vrindavan, the lifting of Govardhan, his return to Mathura and the defeat of Kamsa.
His journey later continues towards Dwarka, exploring friendship, love, separation, duty, kingship and spiritual wisdom.

Sri M, spiritual author, Padma Bhushan recipient and research mentor of the project, explained the spiritual framework behind Krishna’s portrayal in the Bhagavatam.
He said, “The Bhagavatam speaks of many avatars and amsha avatars, describing each as a manifestation of the same supreme truth, energy or goodness in different forms. However, when it describes Krishna, it speaks of him not merely as an amsha avatara, but instead as the Poorna Avatara, or complete physical manifestation of Maha Vishnu or the Supreme Being.”
He further explained that Krishna cannot be understood in a simple, linear manner and that the Bhagavatam presents complex spiritual ideas through stories that can be understood through love, or “prema”.

Sagar Pictures Entertainment says its objective is not merely to recreate celebrated moments from Krishna’s life on a large cinematic scale, but also to explore the meaning behind them.
The studio aims to present how the child Krishna, the flute-playing Krishna of Vrindavan, the friend of Sudama and the teacher of Uddhava are all expressions of the same divine presence.
The project is dedicated to the memory of late filmmaker Dr Ramanand Sagar and Smt Leela Sagar.

The seven-part Shrimad Bhagavatam project marks a new phase for Sagar Pictures Entertainment as it looks to create premium cinematic stories inspired by India’s ancient texts.
Following the title announcement, the studio is expected to reveal more details about Part I in the coming months.
