With Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasmaarriving in theaters tomorrow, Jane Schoenbrun is also offering a promising update on one of horror’s most anticipated television projects: Netflix’s adaptation of Charles Burns’ landmark graphic novel Black Hole.

First announced by Netflix last October, the series comes from Schoenbrun, who is writing and directing the adaptation. Produced by Plan B and New Regency, the project has been given a straight-to-series order.

According to Netflix’s official synopsis, the series is set in the seemingly idyllic town of Roosevelt, where a local legend warns that having sex too young will cause teenagers to contract “the Bug”—a mysterious virus that literally transforms its victims into monsters from their worst nightmares. After one reckless night at the beginning of her senior year, Chris discovers the legend is horrifyingly real. Cast out to the woods alongside the other infected teens, she soon realizes something even more terrifying is stalking them: a serial killer hunting the infected one by one.

The adaptation marks the latest attempt to bring Burns’ acclaimed body horror comic to the screen after years of stalled versions involving filmmakers including David Fincher, Alexandre Aja, and Rick Famuyiwa.

Speaking with Vulture while promoting Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, Schoenbrun revealed that development is progressing well.

According to the mag, Schoenbrun is writing the entire first season and has already completed the first two episodes. The filmmaker also admitted that stepping into television presents a different creative challenge than features.

“My biggest fear is that I end up making something that I’m not proud of,” Schoenbrun told Vulture.

It’s a small update, but an encouraging one. With multiple episodes already written, one of horror’s most celebrated graphic novels continues its long journey toward the screen.

In the meantime, audiences can catch Schoenbrun’s latest feature, Teenage Sex and Death at CampMiasma, when it opens in theaters tomorrow. Here’s our review.
