A classic 007 game has been given the PC remaster treatment, and no it’s not thatone.
Hot off the heels of this year’s 007 First Light, a certain kind of cultural reappraisal is going on with James Bond games at the moment.
Whether that’s the original GoldenEye 007 or some of the later Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig-themed Bond games, it’s a series that fans agree has an awful lot of bangers in its portfolio, even if they all play rather differently.
The Nintendo 64 version of The World is Not Enough isn’t as fondly remembered as GoldenEye, nor has it necessarily been talked about as much as more recent games like 007: Blood Stone and Quantum of Solace.
But amongst Bond fans, the game was a good stepping stone between the original GoldenEye and what would come later in the form of 007: Nightfire.
Well, it’s now getting the unofficial fan remaster treatment courtesy of YouTuber Modern Vintage Gamer, who is working on a recompiled port of The World is Not Enough for the PC platform.
A new PC port of The World is Not Enough is music to Bond fans’ ears
MVG—real name Dimitris Giannakis—devotes a lot of his online content to video game preservation, whether that’s through emulation, decompilations, or modding and other homebrew methods.
Giannakis’ recompiled port of The World Is Not Enough, titled TWINE Recompiled, includes all of the features you’d expect from a modern port of a decompiled game. He’s got the game running at 4K with 60fps, as well as widescreen support also included for gameplay segments.
At the moment, the port doesn’t scale properly for cutscenes, with those segments deferring to an incorrect aspect ratio. However, MVG is certain he’ll be able to fix this before he decides to launch it.
For the most part, it looks like TWINE Recompiled is running really well from what we’ve seen. While MVG claims there are still a few glitches, the footage he has already shown off proves that the progress is already really far along.
As is usually the case with recompiled PC ports, keyboard and mouse support has also been added to the game allowing you to play without gamepad controls. Should you prefer to play with a controller though, support has been widened to accommodate other control schemes, so if you’re not a fan of the Nintendo 64 layout, you have several alternatives to consider.
MVG also claims that he’s looking into adding mod support, which is another thing a lot of modern unofficial PC ports have nowadays. Games like Ship of Harkinian and Super Mario Bros. Remastered feature support for custom mods, texture packs, and other fan-made content, and it seems like TWINE Recompiled will feature the same.

Until then, we’ll have to just sit tight and wait to see when this exactly arrives. MVG has stated that he does not intend to release it until he can get it to a comfortable 1.0.0 release, meaning it’ll be stable enough to run on a variety of systems without any major gamebreaking bugs present.
