Hayao Miyazaki is one of the most celebrated filmmakers in the history of Japanese animation. He took his films to a global stage by becoming the first anime director to win two Academy Awards. All his films remain iconic to this day and receive even more appreciation than they ever did. As the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that he contributed the most to the studio’s legacy. Established in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki, and Isao Takahata, the studio has created some of the most timeless classics of all time. Studio Ghibli’s trademark is hand-drawn animation with incredible attention to detail, including lush landscapes, fluid movement, expressive characters, and breathtaking scenes.

Over the years, Miyazaki has announced his retirement several times, but he always finds himself working on a new project. The director is famous for his passion and dedication towards his work, and fans always look forward to his future projects. His latest film, The Boy and the Heron, was supposed to be his last contribution to the industry. However, shortly after the film’s premiere in 2023, Miyazaki confirmed he would continue working on another film. While the studio hasn’t officially unveiled any updates on Miyazaki’s upcoming work, Suzuki confirmed that the director hasn’t stopped working this entire time. Needless to say, if anyone can top Ghibli’s latest film, it’s Miyazaki himself.
What Is The Boy and the Heron About?
While the film’s Japanese title references Genzaburō Yoshino’s 1937 novel How Do You Live, it is not an adaptation. The film follows a completely different story who lost his mother his mother in a tragic fire at the hospital during the war. Shortly after that, his father marries the younger sister of his mother. They take the boy with them to his late mother’s rural family home, away from the tragic war in Tokyo
Unwilling to accept his father’s remarriage and the fact that his new wife is pregnant, Mahito struggles to adjust to his new life. He also notices a strange gray heron who keeps taunting him. Unexpectedly, the Heron claims Mahito’s mother is alive and lures him into a tower that opens a door to something he couldn’t imagine. The story follows his journey to a new realm as he finds the meaning behind life.
While fans often compared it to Miyazaki’s previous classics, it doesn’t change the fact that The Boy and the Heron is a masterpiece in its own right. It unpacks the importance of healing and breaking cycles, and also digs into larger conversations such as the impact of war and environmental problems. The film was undoubtedly deserving of its Academy Award for its exceptional plot, world-building, animation, and nuanced themes
