While this doesn’t prove the box is worth that markup for a pre-owned console, the presentation could still attract potential buyers.

If you also consider data from older consoles like the Nintendo GameCube, a rare edition, the Panasonic Q GameCube sells for $1,654 without the box, but will sell for $2,200 if the box is included. That’s just one example of how an aged collector’s item can increase in value. And of course, for a Sony PlayStation, a built-in disc edition might be considered a lucrative item to own if the future of PlayStation becomes fully disc-less.

Is it still worth buying a PS5 in 2026?

The real question is whether holding onto the PlayStation 5 retail box is worth the hassle of selling it online, depending on whether people still think buying a PlayStation 5 is worth it. The answer isn’t black and white until Sony has more information about the PlayStation 6, like what the final pricing might be — an industry forecast suggests it might be priced at $1000 — but no one knows until the company announces. Some even speculate it might be more of a handheld or both, which could open up an entirely new market.

Then there are competitors like Nintendo, Valve, and Microsoft that offer attractive living-room gaming options. However, at the very least, the PlayStation 5 has dominated the console market with its high-fidelity visuals and consistent performance, even with AAA titles (especially on the Pro model). Lastly, it also helps that Sony’s history of supporting last-gen years into the next-gen cycle is pretty well-established. So really, it is still a decent buy — it’s just that people are more worried about the expenses of buying on a tight household budget. But that’s also where a used market could hold a lot of potential, targeting the budget-conscious consumer.
