Ironmouse, Who Hates AI, Not Pleased That AI Watermark Appeared On Her Art In Fortnite, Which Loves AI

Recent years have seen Epic make no secret of AI use in numerous portions of its pipeline, including character art. But where the house that built—and then was built into something else by—Fortnite is ready to rule over an AI-ravaged <a href="https://comicvibe.com/breakbeat-media-secures-expanded-a-r-i-financing-to-scale-entertainment-platform/” title=”Breakbeat Media Secures Expanded A.R.I. Financing to Scale Entertainment Platform”>entertainment landscape, many within its ecosystem aren’t so hot on the tech. You might, then, read the above headline and assume that Epic’s increasingly automatedhusk factory spat out something a notoriously anti-AI streamer didn’t like. The reality of the situation is much more complicated.

“Meow,” a song by Ironmouse, Sleeping Forest, and HalaCG, was actually added to Fortnitelast month, but it wasn’t until the end of last week that fans spotted a Gemini watermark in the corner of its album art. This came as a surprise to Ironmouse, who in June went so far as to cancel a sponsored stream ofgacha game Neverness To Everness over AI concerns.

“I had no idea [about the Gemini watermark],” she replied to a fan on Twitter. “Thanks for bringing it to my attention. My team has contacted the people in charge of this particular release and demanded it to be changed.”

Nope i had no idea thanks for bringing it to my attention. my team has contacted the people in charge of this particular release and demanded it to be changed.

Furor both preceded and followed this exchange. When Ironmouse’s Fortnitecollab was first announced a few weeks ago, some fans accused her of hypocrisy stemming from Epic’s gleeful overreliance on AI. This is a valid concern, one that self-professedly anti-AI studios and figures have increasingly been forced to grapple with as they’ve leaned on Fortniteto reach younger audiences. But it appears that Epic was not directly responsible for this particular instance of ball droppage.

“The artwork was provided to us by the artist and same that was used across all [demand-side platforms],” an Epic spokesperson told Dexerto following a change to the art that altered its background and removed the watermark, which appears to have happened sometime this week. “Once it was changed by the artist, we also changed it out, same as the other streaming and digital platforms.”

The artist who designed the “Club Ironmouse” logo that features prominently in the offending album art, Detetiive, also said that they had nothing to do with this release.

“I only designed the Club Ironmouse logo,” they said on Twitter, posting a timelapse of their process. “I used Procreate and Adobe Illustrator, and I wasn’t involved in the album cover design.”

The real culprit? Trap Nation, a music promoter with which Ironmouse collaborated to distribute the track.

“We’re working with Ironmouse to replace the Club Ironmouse artwork across all platforms ASAP,” Trap Nation wrote on Twitter last week, before the AI-assisted artwork was replaced. “The artwork was not intended to be final, and Ironmouse was unaware AI had been used. We apologize for the error and appreciate everyone who flagged it.”

Aftermath reached out to Ironmouse, Epic, and Trap Nation for more information about how this slipped through, as well as how they plan to avoid similar situations in the future. But they did not reply as of this publishing.

So, to sum up, an AI watermark appeared on art for the work of an anti-AI streamer in a pro-AI game, but it was not directly the fault of the pro-AI developer (though the developer absolutely should have caught this), nor was it the fault of the original logo artist, who did not use AI. Instead, a music distributor that does not appear to have qualms with AI failed to notify the streamer of AI usage on what is, at the end of the day, a simple embellishment of a preexisting logo. This resulted in days of grief and multiple headaches for those involved—all over something that could easily have been done by hand.

And, per usual with AI, the specific person or people who made these choices remain unidentified. Are they still employed? Will they face even slight consequences? Impossible to say. The takeaway: Just don’t use AI! Generally, yes, but especially with something like this, which in all other senses should have been so, so easy.
