Stage: Building · Momentum: High · Forecast confidence: Moderate

Physical retail is being rebuilt around entertainment, community and fandom — and Gen Z is the reason. Stores that once competed on price and selection are now competing on experience, and the shift is accelerating fast enough that the winners of the next five years may not look like retailers at all. Here’s what’s happening, why it’s happening now and where it’s headed.

    What’s Happening

“Retailtainment” — a mash-up of retail and entertainment — is moving from buzzword to strategy across the industry. As the marketing agency Into The Minds defines it, the approach “involves integrating entertainment elements into the commercial environment to transform the traditional shopping experience.”

The customer data backing the shift is striking. Research by financial technology platform Adyen found that 73% of 18- to 27-year-olds shop in-store at least once a week, compared with 65% of Baby Boomers. A separate Talker Research survey conducted for ThriftBooks found 63% of Gen Z and 57% of millennials are actively getting offline, versus 42% of Gen X and 29% of baby boomers.

Malls, flagships and pop-ups are absorbing that demand. Meet-and-greets, album-release events, collectible drops and immersive brand spaces are pulling foot traffic that convenience-focused e-commerce cannot replicate.

    Why It’s Happening

    Three forces are converging.

First, online shopping already solved convenience. Physical retail has to justify itself with something a screen can’t deliver — a reason to leave the house. Entertainment is that reason.

Second, personalization has become table stakes, and it’s easier to deliver in person. McKinsey reports that “seventy-one percent of consumers expect companies to deliver personalized interactions” and “seventy-six percent get frustrated when this doesn’t happen.” Face-to-face service closes that gap in a way targeted ads rarely do.

Third, fandom is now a retail engine. Writing in Fast Company, Val Vacante argued that “retail is becoming a cultural gathering space where people connect around shared passions. Fans are powerful customers.” Music releases, TV tie-ins and film-driven merch drops are pulling die-hards into stores for events they can’t experience through a shipping box.

“When you walk into a store, the experience should feel like a flagship: how it looks, how it feels, the level of service. That should apply regardless of whether it’s department store, off-price or full-price retail,” James Turco, a Gen Z retail professional, shared with Fashion United

Layered on top: a generational pushback against screens. The same Talker Research data shows 54% of Gen Z and 43% of millennials build designated screen-free time into their day. That’s not a niche wellness trend — that’s a customer segment actively looking for reasons to be somewhere physical.

    What Could Be Next

Expect the “flagship standard” Turco describes to spread far beyond flagship stores. The competitive floor is rising: if a Gen Z shopper can get a curated, event-driven, aesthetically considered experience at one retailer, the store down the block that still feels like a warehouse will lose the visit. Three scenarios are worth planning around.

Scenario 1: Fandom becomes a retail category of its own. Watch for more brands to build event calendars — release parties, signings, limited drops — the way concert venues book tours. Reader action: If you’re a fan of a specific artist, franchise or creator, sign up for the retailer’s SMS or app alerts, not just the artist’s. The store will often break the news first, and the best drops sell out at the door.

Scenario 2: Personalization goes physical. With McKinsey’s data showing frustration when personalization fails, retailers will lean on in-store associates, appointment shopping and clienteling apps to deliver the tailored experience algorithms promise online. Reader action: Before your next major purchase — beauty, apparel, tech — book a store appointment instead of walking in cold. You’ll typically get a dedicated associate, early access to inventory and, increasingly, a discount for showing up.

Scenario 3: Malls reinvent as third places. Rather than dying, shopping centers are being repositioned as social infrastructure — where Gen Z meets friends, kills an afternoon, attends events. Expect more food halls, gaming lounges, live programming and pop-up rotations replacing shuttered anchor stores. Reader action: If you own or manage a small retail concept, pitch mall operators on short-term pop-up leases now. Landlords are hungrier for foot-traffic drivers than they’ve been in a decade.

The clear takeaway: the physical store isn’t dying — the boring store is. If a retailer can’t tell you why walking in beats clicking add-to-cart, it’s already losing to one that can.

THREE SIGNALS TO WATCH 1. Holiday-season foot traffic reports at U.S. malls and flagship stores — the first hard read on whether Gen Z’s in-store weekly habit holds through peak retail. 2. New brand-plus-fandom retail activations tied to major album releases, streaming premieres or film openings in the next two quarters. 3. Rollouts of in-store personalization tools (booked appointments, clienteling apps, associate-led styling) at mid-tier and off-price chains — the tell that the flagship standard is trickling down.
