Scharon Harding, senior tech reporter at Ars Technica, talks about how, with so many things going digital-only or subscription-based, we don’t own the media we buy anymore.

Earlier this month, Sony <a href="https://blog.playstation.com/2026/07/01/physical-disc-production-ending-in-january-2028-for-new-games-releasing-on-playstation-consoles/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>announced it would be ditching physical discs for its PlayStation gaming console. As of January 2028, Sony said it will no longer be producing games in physical formats.

It’s one example of the digitization of everything. With the slow but steady transition from physical games, books, movies, and other media to digitized copies, do we really own anything anymore?

Scharon Harding is a senior technology reporter at Ars Technica. “Marketplace” host Kai Ryssdal spoke with Harding about the future of media ownership in the digital era.
