Disney has officially axed a previously confirmed sequel project.
Earlier this year, it was announced that Wonder Man would return for a second season on Disney+. However, the TV series – which stars Yahya Abdul Mateen II and Ben Kingsley starred in the series as Simon Williams and Trevor Slattery – has now been canceled, with its writers released to other projects.
Why Has Marvel Axed Wonder Man?
Wonder Man followed struggling actor Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), whose concealed superpowers threatened to derail his shot at leading a Hollywood remake. Alongside fading performer Trevor Slattery, he navigated auditions, ambition, and an industry more interested in marketability than artistic integrity.
Rather than teeing up another world-ending crossover, the Disney+ series occupied a smaller corner of the MCU. Ben Kingsley’s Trevor linked it directly to Iron Man 3 (2013) and Shang-Chi(2021), while returning Damage Control agent P. Cleary connected Simon’s predicament to the franchise’s wider treatment of superpowered individuals.
That lower-stakes approach proved a hit with critics, who praised Abdul-Mateen and Kingsley’s chemistry, the Hollywood satire, and the decision to prioritize character over spectacle. Wonder Man earned 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and 75 on Metacritic, marking one of Marvel’s warmer recent receptions.
In March, Disney officially greenlit a second season of the show. But just a few months later, it seems to have had second thoughts.
The most logical explanation is that the show simply did not perform well enough to justify the budget for a follow-up. Disney kept quiet on exact viewing figures, but Wonder Man briefly made its mark on Nielsen. The series ranked eighth among streaming originals for the week of January 26 to February 1, only to disappear from the top 10 seven days later.
Its renewal was unusual in the first place, with Loki and Daredevil: Born Again currently standing as the only live-action Disney+ MCU shows to receive a second season. Daredevil: Born Again is also receiving a third season.
Fans React to Show’s End
Unsurprisingly, fans aren’t happy about the U-turn in Marvel’s plans.
“I don’t think I’ve ever felt more seen than watchingWonderMan,” one fan wrote on X.“That first season is so special to me and seemed like the perfect show for Marvel to run for years to come. It feels like robbery to not get another season.”

Another wrote, “Canceling ‘Wonder Man’ after already giving it the green light AND after Yahya’s Emmy nom is a huge slap in the face.”
One said, “I can’t fathom Wonder Man being cancelled brah. That was the one MCU show I found myself gleefully recommending to people.”
What’s Next for Wonder Man?
Notably, the show was created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, with Cretton directing the first two episodes. Cretton is also the director of Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), which was released in select territories yesterday ahead of a U.S. release on July 31, and has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from both fans and critics.
An individual with knowledge of the situation has reportedly told Variety that while the characters won’t star in a second season, Marvel is open to using them in future projects.
But with Marvel’s slot typically lined up well in advance, the odds of any substantial feature for Simon Williams or Trevor Slattery in the next few years feel pretty slim.
It doesn’t appear that Marvel ever actually began series work on a second season, as the writers’ room was never opened.
The finale of Wonder Man left Simon with everything he thought he wanted: the Wonder Man movie was a hit, and his career had finally taken off. However, he sacrificed it all to break Trevor out of Damage Control custody, exposing his powers and leaving the pair seemingly on the run.
