What if falling asleep meant facing a killer you couldn’t escape? Filmmaker Wes Craven brought that terrifying idea to life in his 1984 movie.

Released in November 1984, A Nightmare on Elm Street introduced Freddy Krueger, a supernatural villain who attacks and kills teenagers in their dreams. The film stars Robert Englund as Krueger and Heather Langenkamp as Nancy Thompson.

Nancy discovers that she and her friends are being targeted by Krueger, whose disfigured face and bladed glove make him a terrifying presence in their nightmares.

As the killings continue, Nancy investigates Krueger’s connection to her community and searches for a way to stop him before he claims more victims. Johnny Depp made his feature-film debut as Glen Lantz, Nancy’s boyfriend.

Craven wrote and directed the film, using dreams to blur the line between reality and nightmare. Unlike slasher films that confine their danger to physical locations, A Nightmare on Elm Street allows its killer to manipulate the dream world and exploit his victims’ fears.

Wes Craven’s 1984 Horror Classic Still Earns Praise Decades Later

Even decades after its release, A Nightmare on Elm Street continues to receive critical recognition. The film currently holds a 93% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, while its audience score stands at 84%.

Critics praised the film’s inventive storytelling and Krueger’s terrifying appearance.

“Wes Craven’s intelligent premise, combined with the horrifying visual appearance of Freddy Krueger, still causes nightmares to this day,” the site’s critics’ consensus stated.

Time Out also recognized the film, ranking it No. 21 on its updated 2026 list of the <a href="https://www.timeout.com/film/best-horror-films” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>100 best horror movies of all time.

“It’s arguably the single greatest set-up for a modern horror movie: a monster that invades your dreams, slashing away at your very psyche with his razor-fingered gloves,” the publication wrote. “Wes Craven’s control over his material is absolute, and even a handful of low-rent, low-budget effects can’t undermine the mounting air of existential, avant-garde dread.”

Distributed by New Line Cinema, A Nightmare on Elm Street became a commercial success and helped establish the studio as a major force in filmmaking.

“It’s also, lest we forget, the movie that made a studio… Seven Nightmare sequels and little more than a decade later, they funded the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy,” Time Out noted.

Made on a production budget of $1.8 million, A Nightmare on Elm Street grossed more than $59.2 million worldwide across its original run and later rereleases. Its success also strengthened Craven’s reputation as a horror filmmaker and, through Englund’s chilling portrayal, helped make the razor-gloved killer a pop culture icon.
