While football is still one of the biggest forms of entertainment in Ghana, the way that supporters follow it has seen radical changes. Watching the action is now only one part of the experience, with smartphones providing scores, statistics, team news, and video throughout the day.

This is part of a much wider move towards mobile entertainment. The likes of video streaming, gaming, and sports coverage are all trying to gain attention on the same devices. That said, football is still important, from the Black Stars and domestic competitions, to the Premier League and Champions League. The big change is that supporters now have more ways to engage with the game.

Football Remains At The Centre Of Ghanaian Sport

Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup gave a great example of how football can dominate national attention. The Black Stars secured their fifth World Cup appearance with a top finish in their qualifying group. That campaign ended with a 1-0 win over Comoros back in October 2025.

Ghana was then drawn in Group L, where they joined England, Croatia, and Panama. The tournament gave plenty to talk around things, such as tactics and squad selection.

Club football provides an even more consistent stream of entertainment. European leagues have large audiences in Ghana, whiledomestic competitions provide local interest. With domestic, European and international football overlapping, supporters have matches to follow throughout much of the year.

Smartphones Have Become Part Of Watching Football

It used to be the case that football coverage was purely about coverage on TV, radio, and newspapers. While these are all still relevant, smartphones have added something new. Viewers can now watch a match while checking stats, player information, and monitor results elsewhere.

Betting is now connected to this experience, too. The Gaming Commission of Ghana has a register of licensed operators that covers sports betting as well as other regulated gaming activities.

Access to online football betting fits naturally into this mobile environment. Pre-match markets can be viewed while supporters check team news and starting line-ups, while in-play markets change as events unfold. Live scores and statistics are also commonly incorporated into sports platforms, bringing several elements of the football experience onto one screen.

    Digital Entertainment Goes Beyond Football

The same kind of changes can also be seen in other forms of entertainment. A smartphone can be used for the likes of music during a journey, football highlights during a break, and even a film or game later on in the day. The advancements in streaming mean that we are all now less reliant on fixed TV schedules.

Gaming has followed a similar path. Mobile devices provide casual games alongside traditional formats adapted for online audiences. Someone choosing to play poker online, for example, is accessing a digital version of a card game that existed long before smartphones. Familiar elements such as hand rankings, betting rounds and decisions about whether to call, raise or fold remain, while the table is accessed through a digital interface.

Football Is Also A Major Business Platform

The sheer popularity of football means that it is also valuable as a business outside of sport. Sponsorship means that companies can associate themselves with teams and competitions that are followed by huge audiences. At the same time, digital media has increased the reach of those partnerships.

Prior to the 2026 World Cup, KFC Ghana agreed a sponsorship deal with the Ghana Football Association. This runs until May 2027 and covers the Black Stars as well as other national team activities.

Modern sponsorship goes beyond advertising boards inside stadiums. Brands can appear in social media content, interviews, competitions and videos throughout the week. Major tournaments increase those opportunities because attention begins before the opening match through squad announcements and preparations, then continues through results and analysis.

    Sports Media Is Changing Too

Media organisations have adapted to the same habits. A football story can reach supporters through a website, social media post, search result, notification or video, while audiences expect transfer developments, team news and results quickly.

Football fits well in this environment because interest continues beyond the 90 minutes. Transfers, injuries, team selections, sponsorships and upcoming fixtures provide material throughout the week. This gives sports publishers a constant flow of stories while allowing supporters to follow clubs and players beyond matchday.

Football At The Centre Of Digital Culture

Technology hasn’t replaced Ghana’s traditional football culture. Stadiums, viewing centres and conversations between supporters remain important, while mobile technology has added further ways to participate.

Football remains at the very centre of this culture, but the experience around it has now expanded. For Ghana’s sports, media and entertainment industries, mobile technology has completely changed how audiences follow matches, consume content and spend their leisure time.
