Minn. (Northern News Now) – Some Hermantown High School students are trading textbooks for virtual reality headsets in an immersive new program from Dunwoody College of Technology
Hermantown is one of only six school districts across Minnesota selected to pilot the initiative. Through the partnership, students have access to two new hybrid Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses: Fundamentals of DC Circuits and Early Global Architecture.
Using Meta Quest VR headsets, students can explore historic architectural sites and study the fundamentals of electrical circuits in real time.
“We’ll get to the part of the lab where we get to interact with these things without, you know, having real world experience and getting ourselves shocked,” said junior Aiden Albrecht.
Albrecht is one of 13 students enrolled in the inaugural program. For him, it isn’t just about new technology. It’s about learning new career paths.
“Throughout the course they provide people and videos that are in these fields and they tell you what your positions could look like in case you did want to go further with it,” Albrecht said.
Dunwoody offered the pilot curriculum for free this semester, leaving the district to cover roughly $2,500 for the headsets.
Hermantown CTE coordinator Scott Larson said the program is an investment in the school and community.
“It’s been a very collaborative experience through students, families, community, the Dunwoody institute, and the school to really make this a great experience,” he said. “My vision: What can we do for the entire district, not just two or three classes? What can we do for all curriculum, all grades, down to kindergarten? What could we do with some of this tech? That’s what I’m excited about.”
