The world of Gray Zone Warfare has been ablaze in recent days following the publishing of an inflammatory video talking about the ‘cheating situation’ in the open-world tactical shooter. In a video shared on YouTube, we see 45 minutes of a complete breakdown of what appears to be a growing problem, and days after it surfaced, MADFINGER Games directly addressed it.
While the video has garnered stacks of support online, MADFINGER insists the creator who uploaded it is categorically wrong, especially when claiming that the developer is censoringcontent posted about the cheating issue.
It’s a tricky situation for the community.
Is Gray Zone Warfare Suffering from a Cheater Issue?
Let’s be frank; the world of multiplayer-based gaming is rife with cheaters and other malicious operators. From Call of Duty to Escape from Tarkov, and from Rainbow Six to Counter-Strike, if there’s a multiplayer title, it’s a fair bet that cheaters are trying to ruin everyone’s fun in that game.
We’ve even seen cheaters try to spoil betasand low-budget, indie gameswith multiplayer mechanics – or demos.

The latest game to come under immense fire from the wider gaming community is Gray Zone Warfare, the ambitious, open-world tactical shooter from MADFINGER Games that burst onto the scene in April 2024. It has evolved nicely over the years, and earlier this year, it underwent the 0.4 update, which was a night-and-day transformation of the title that spiked the peak player count.
However, in a recent video shared by a creator named Fisherman Dave, we see a deep dive into everythingyou’d want to know about the situation involving cheatersin Gray Zone. He walks us through a chat with one of the game’s most prolific creators, showcases discussions with developers, pokes into the EULA, and reflects on social media sentiments from the community.
It’s a fair length, but it’s as comprehensive a breakdown as you could ask for:
One of the leading claims that Fisherman Dave made was regarding censorship. He accused MADFINGER of copyright striking any videos talking about the cheating situation, leaning on his posts being removedfrom the Gray Zone Warfare subreddit as an example of said censorship.
This was pounced on by MADFINGER Games in the comments under the video two days afterit was uploaded:
First, I would like to acknowledge that we are aware of cheaters in Gray Zone Warfare.
We have already stated this multiple times on our live streams. Unfortunately, cheating affects many online multiplayer games these days, including ours. That said, we are actively combating the issue with a combination of automated and manual anti-cheat measures.
These tools are and will continue to improve alongside the game’s development. Now I would like to clarify several claims made in the video above. I want to make this absolutely clear – MADFINGER Games has never issued, and will never issue, copyright strikes against content creators for criticizing Gray Zone Warfare.
Neither creators nor other players need to fear repercussions for sharing honest opinions about the game or about us as developers. The only videos we actively seek to remove are those that attempt to spread cheating software. This is why our EULA includes provisions addressing the promotion and advertising of cheats.
Deeper research would uncover that the wording of these provisions is standard in the industry and is intended solely to help us and other game developers battle cheat providers. Fisherman Dave’s video was not permitted on our official subreddit due to several reasons: It showed the effects of cheating alongside an exploit that could be used to camp a faction base (fix will be introduced in the coming patch btw).
Even with the players’ names and the cheating software censored, the footage could still draw attention to the exploit and encourage others to reproduce the behavior. The other reason was the concern that the video could create an impression that blatant cheating and abuse of exploits are common in Gray Zone Warfare.
Cheaters are present in the game, and we do not want to dismiss the experiences of affected players. We are painfully aware of the frustration they cause. However, the situation shown in the video is not representative of the wider player base’s regular experience.
Apologies for the wall of text, but like Fisherman Dave, I wanted to be comprehensive and better represent MFG’s position in this debate.
Dave referenced similar situations that have happened with other developers, bringing up a rather prolific example tied to Escape from Tarkov. Once upon a time, Gray Zone Warfare was labelled an extraction game, which placed it in direct competition with Escape from Tarkov, but things have changed since then.
Years ago, a YouTuber named g0at uploaded a 40-minute video exploring the plague of cheaters damning Escape from Tarkov to hell, going as far as to conduct a controversial experiment. He purchased and used cheatsin Escape from Tarkov, using his newfound tools to showcase exactly how many other cheatershe ran into.
To this day, the video has racked up more than 4.6 million views and is g0at’s most popular video by far.
But for all the publicity that video got, and for how intensely it portrayed the cheating issue in Escape from Tarkov, it was nevertargeted by Battlestate Games, a company that is staunchlyagainst the concept of cheating, as you’d expect them to be.
It should be stressed that Fisherman Dave’s video has now been on YouTube for more than five days, at the time of writing, and it hasn’t been struck down by MADFINGER Games. It has generated a lotof discourse about the wider situation, though, and it could be veryharmful for MADFINGER going forward.
