Compatibility: Android vs. iOS
No surprises here. The Apple Watch Series 11 requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. The Pixel Watch 5 is slightly more flexible, as it simply requires an Android phone running Android 12 or newer and doesn’t necessitate a Pixel phone, though some of its best AI-based tricks only work when the watch is paired with a first-party handset.
Price: The Gap Has Officially Closed
The 41mm Pixel Watch 5 starts at $399.99, and the 45mm version starts at $429.99. The 42mm Apple Watch Series 11 similarly starts at $399, and the 46mm model at $429. Both charge an extra $100 for the cellular model. Both also come in a variety of colors, with a handful of different band options to choose from. The Apple Watch Series 11 has a titanium version for a $300 premium.
Power and Connectivity: Under-the-Hood Upgrades Take the Lead
Pitting the processors inside these two smartwatches against each other isn’t exactly an apples-to-apples comparison, but the Pixel Watch 5 does have an advantage in terms of newness. Its dual-processor setup, featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated chip and a Cortex-M55 coprocessor, debuted this generation. In comparison, the Series 11 features the same S10 chip as its predecessor, the Series 10.
There aren’t firm benchmarks for testing smartwatch processing power, but both chips support the latest AI, health-tracking, and other features, so neither smartwatch is likely to underperform.
In terms of connectivity, both have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as well as an ultra-wideband chip for precise location tracking. The Series 11 has the edge in cellular support with 5G connectivity for faster download speeds compared with the Pixel Watch 5, which still uses LTE. The Pixel Watch 5, though, offers satellite connectivity so you can contact emergency services if you’re stranded in a location without a cell signal. Cupertino has a similar feature, but it’s reserved for the premium Apple Watch Ultra 3.
Winner: Pixel Watch 5

Design: Round Elegance vs. Square Efficiency
This category comes down almost entirely to taste. Do you want a circular watch face or a square one? Both Apple and Google have established a look for their respective watches and stuck with it for generations, with refinements along the way.
Both watches are dust- and water-resistant to a depth of 164 feet. The Apple Watch Series 11 has a scratch-resistant coating on the display, offering extra protection against wear and tear. I worry more about cracking the Pixel Watch 5’s domed glass display, but the watch is fully serviceable. Additionally, the Apple Watch is distinctly thinner at 9.7mm compared with 12.3mm for the Pixel Watch 5.
Winner: Apple Watch Series 11

Display: Curved Charm vs. Flat Clarity
The Pixel Watch 5 has a Super AMOLED, domed Actua 360 screen measuring 1.27 inches on the small model and 1.46 inches on the large size. The Apple Watch Series 11 uses the same wide-angle LTPO3 OLED display as its predecessor, measuring 1.65 inches for the 42mm version and 1.81 inches for the 46mm model.
Both displays support adaptive brightness for automatic adjustments based on the ambient lighting and reach a maximum output of 3,000 nits, which is plenty bright, even when viewed in direct sunlight. Both screens look pristine for a variety of apps and content, and are clearly visible even when viewed from the side.
The winner here again comes down to taste. Both screens are capably designed. The Pixel Watch 5 has a more striking curve to its screen, but you might prefer a squared display, which arguably makes it easier to read long blocks of text.
Battery Life: Breaking the One-Day Barrier
Both Apple and Google have made strides to improve the battery life of their watches in recent years. The Series 11 delivers the first substantial increase in estimated capacity for a mainline Series model since the very first Apple Watch. All prior models have an estimated 18 hours of battery life with typical use, and the Series 11 bumps that up to 24 hours. Apple’s estimates are also traditionally conservative, and the 46mm Series 11 lasted 43 hours in testing with the always-on display enabled.
The Pixel Watch 5 comes with a higher battery estimate. The smaller model promises 30 hours and the larger 40 hours. These estimates match the Pixel Watch 4. I haven’t fully tested the Pixel Watch 5 yet, but the larger, 45mm Pixel Watch 4 powered through an impressive 56 hours with the always-on display enabled in my testing. If the Pixel Watch 5 performs similarly, it will win this category.

Lifestyle Features: Wrist-Based AI Gets Proactive
If you want a smartwatch for calling, texting, mobile payments, playing games, or downloading apps, the Pixel Watch 5 and the Apple Watch Series 11 both fit the bill, putting a simplified version of your phone on your wrist. You can use gestures to control the watches with one hand, and both even have built-in digital assistants that use AI to help with searches, navigation, and basic tasks.
The Pixel Watch 5 uses Gemini Intelligence to offer proactive automations. For instance, the watch can pull up a confirmation number or a restaurant’s contact information if you’re texting about a related topic. It can automatically show your flight information when you’re headed to the airport, or how many stops you have left on the bus.
With the Apple Watch Series 11, Siri AI in the forthcoming watchOS 27 offers similarly personalized and contextual help, which makes sense, given Apple’s partnership with Google to add capabilities to its AI software. In terms of third-party apps, both watches offer a massive selection, but Apple’s App Store still takes the lead.
Winner: Apple Watch Series 11

Fitness and Health: Next-Gen Sensors and AI Coaching
In recent years, smartwatches have become increasingly adept at fitness tracking, closing the gap with dedicated devices from companies like Garmin and Polar. Both the Apple Watch Series 11 and the Pixel Watch 5 track details of your activity throughout the day and your sleep quality at night. Both offer automatic and manual tracking for numerous exercises and sports. They track blood oxygen saturation, heart rate, and skin temperature; provide electrocardiogram (ECG) readings with irregular heart rhythm notifications; and can alert you to sleep apnea. Both are highly capable fitness companions and guides.
The Apple Watch can warn you about potential hypertension, and it has a Workout Buddy that provides AI-generated stats and encouragement as you exercise. It monitors your vitals and sums up your rest with a holistic sleep score. The watch also seamlessly integrates with the company’s premium Fitness+ service, offering a wide variety of guided workout classes for $9.99 per month.
The Pixel Watch 5 introduces a suite of health monitoring features called Health Guardian. This includes a blood pressure check, similar to Apple’s Hypertension notifications, as well as monitoring for insulin resistance. With a new feature called Breathing Emergency, the Pixel Watch 5 can automatically call for help if it detects a persistent drop in oxygen saturation. The Pixel Watch offers AI workout guidance through Google Health Premium ($9.99 per month), which includes Google Health Coach, the most comprehensive AI-powered fitness guide I’ve tested. It creates a workout plan for you, and adapts its advice based on your needs and circumstances.
Google says refinements to the Pixel Watch 5’s GPS improve performance when tracking your location in big cities with skyscrapers. I need to test that watch to see how this bears out in real life.
The Verdict
I can’t definitively say which watch is the best right now, as I still need to test the Pixel Watch 5. Most categories here are tied, with the Pixel Watch potentially winning if its battery life lives up to expectations. It would make sense if the Pixel Watch 5 is slightly better overall, since the Apple Watch Series 11 is almost a year old at this point, and we’ll likely see a new model debut within the next month or so.
That said, the Series 11 is still an excellent smartwatch, and the competition is close enough that you don’t need to worry about missing out if you’re devoted to the opposite ecosystem. Even so, I’ll update this story once I’ve reviewed the Pixel Watch 5, so check back soon. In the meantime, head over to our story comparing the Pixel Watch 5 and Samsung Galaxy Watch 9.
