Glee Is Coming Back: Disney+ and Hulu Confirm New Series

Disney+ and Huluhave ordered a newGlee series, withRyan Murphyconfirming that a script has already been written. The cast and release date have yet to be announced.

Glee is coming back. Disney+ and Hulu have officially ordered a new series from 20th Television, bringing the musical comedy-drama back more than 11 years after its final episode aired on Fox in 2015.

The announcement follows comments from co-creator Ryan Murphy in September. Speaking to Good Morning America, he confirmed that he had finished writing a reboot script with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, who created the original series with him. Murphy also revealed that he had contacted around ten former cast members about returning.

Chris Colfer, who played Kurt Hummel, apparently wasn’t among them. In an interview with Bustle earlier this month, he said he knew nothing about the reboot and hadn’t heard anything directly. Colfer also spoke about how difficult it would be to revisit Glee without Naya Rivera, who played Santana Lopez and died in 2020.

Lea Michele, who played Rachel Berry, has been more enthusiastic about the possibility. Speaking to E! News in September, she said she would follow Murphy wherever he goes. But neither Michele nor Colfer has been announced as part of the new cast.

Meanwhile, Colfer and Darren Criss recently reunited at London’s Royal Albert Hall, performing their Glee duet “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”.The performance brought Kurt and Blaine back into the spotlight, although it was not connected to the new production.

The original Gleepremiered in 2009 and ran for six seasons, becoming one of Fox’s best-known musical television series. It also gave LGBTQ+ characters a prominent place on mainstream television, particularly through Kurt and Blaine’s relationship and the stories of Santana and Brittany. The series won GLAAD Media Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2010 and 2011.

Whether the reboot will bring back familiar characters or introduce an entirely new cast is still unknown. Disney has not revealed the storyline, filming schedule or premiere date.
