This week’s episode of Girls Gotta Eat‘sThe Snack had no shortage of pop culture headlines to cover. On the latest episode, hosts Ashley Hesseltine and Rayna Greenberg tackled the stories everyone seemed to be talking about, from America’s 250th birthday celebrations and World Cup drama to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s highly anticipated wedding

The hosts mix celebrity news and internet discourse with plenty of their own commentary as they break down the week’s biggest headlines. Whether you missed a few stories or just want the highlights, here are the biggest moments from this week’s pop culture roundup

America’s 250th birthday was equal parts celebration and reality check

America’s 250th birthday gave Hesseltine and Greenberg plenty to unpack. While the milestone was marked with everything from Beyoncé’s surprise release of “Morning Dew” to the Eiffel Tower lighting up with a “USA 250” display in Paris, the hosts admit the holiday felt more bittersweet than celebratory

“I really wanted to celebrate this milestone,” Greenberg says, explaining that the Fourth of July had been “kind of a bummer overall.” She credits Beyoncé with bringing “our spirits up,” joking that while Swift was busy getting married, Beyoncé stepped in and saved the day with new music

The World Cup has become this summer’s biggest shared experience

Between packed watch parties and fans rallying behind countries they’d never rooted for before, both hosts agree that this year’s World Cup has become one of the biggest cultural moments of the summer

“It just feels so exciting; I’m really loving it,” Hesseltine says, pointing to the crowds gathering for watch parties across the U.S., while Greenberg noticed the same enthusiasm while traveling through Europe. “Everybody’s celebrating it,” she says. “Everybody’s like, ‘I gotta get home from dinner to watch it.’”

Of course, the conversation eventually turned to Team USA’s Round of 16 loss to Belgium—and the controversy surrounding it. Greenberg shares her frustration over the decision to allow Folarin Balogun to play after initially being suspended, arguing that political involvement had no place in the tournament. “A world leader should not be able to pick up the phone and call a sports organization,” she says, adding that she feels the controversy overshadowed what should have been about the game itself.

Rather than dampening their excitement, though, the hosts agreed the tournament has become about far more than wins and losses. It’s the underdog stories, combined with the feeling that, for a few weeks at least, the whole world is tuning in together

Cape Verde became the tournament’s ultimate Cinderella story

If there was one World Cup storyline Hesseltine couldn’t stop thinking about, it was Cape Verde’s unexpected run

“This is truly the most legendary story coming out of the World Cup,” she says of the African island nation, which she noted has a population of roughly 500,000. Part of what made the team’s journey so compelling was how unlikely it all seemed. Hesseltine explains that some players were reportedly scouted through LinkedIn, with one even thinking the message was spam

Then came their match against Argentina, where Cape Verde pushed one of the best teams in the world into extra time. To put it in perspective, Hesseltine shares a comparison she saw online: “It’s the ’98 Bulls against whatever your high school team was.”

The moment that really sealed the story, though, came after the match, when Argentina’s Lionel Messi embraced Cape Verde’s goalkeeper Vozinha. According to Hesseltine, Messi told him, “You are great. Your people should be proud of you,” and agreed to swap jerseys

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding had them hooked

The hosts spent the majority of the episode talking about the event the country could not stop unpacking over the week: Swift and Kelce’s Madison Square Garden wedding

“I cannot believe that it really happened,” Hesseltine says, admitting she never seriously considered MSG as a wedding venue until the rumors became reality. But the more she thought about it, the more the choice made sense. As she pointed out, the arena offered privacy, security, and enough space to pull off a massive event without forcing guests to fly somewhere remote

The logistics of it all are what really fascinated them, though. “I want to know what you did to the floor at Madison Square Garden,” Greenberg says. “I want to see the décor. I just want to see what they did in there; I’m dying for it.”

They also pushed back on the online criticism surrounding the wedding, especially after reports that Swift donated millions to charity alongside the event. Greenberg says the backlash felt disproportionate, arguing that people were spending more energy criticizing Swift than focusing on people causing actual harm

Still, above all else, they were just dying for details. “I wish there was a documentary about it,” Greenberg says
