“Gilligan’s Island” is one of the most iconic series to come out of the 1960s, but the show’s early ratings were low. Alan Hale Jr., who portrayed the Skipper, believed that was because audiences initially did not grasp the absurdity.
When we were introduced to the crew and passengers of the S.S. Minnow in 1964, the show’s ridiculous concept and slapstick-style execution also wasn’t appreciated by critics. “I think at first people didn’t know what to make of the show,” said Hale Jr., speaking to The Orlando Sentinel in 1966. “They soon caught on that it was a complete farce.”
The seven castaways entertained audiences for three years until its abrupt cancellation on April 17, 1967. It spawned several “Gilligan’s Island” TV shows and movies.
CBS Executives also had trouble understanding the show
CBS executives, primarily network president Jim Aubrey, disliked the concept of the show, even going so far as to suggest they leave the island by the second episode. Show creator Sherwood Schwartz, who also created “The Brady Bunch”, was against it. According to Catchy Comedy, Schwartz told TV Guide in 1965, “That’s an idea for a show, but it’s not my show.” The network also could not understand why audiences at “Gilligan’s Island” test screenings enjoyed it, leading executives to order multiple screenings in an effort to find an audience that agreed with them. They failed to do so.
It seemed even Schwartz himself had trouble explaining the concept to CBS. When speaking to Women’s World, his son Lloyd shared how his father pitched the show to executives, saying “What we have here is a social microcosm.” When executives pointed out that the show was conceptualized as a comedy, he replied, “Well, it’s a funny social microcosm.”
