Ghostsfans are in for a ton of surprises in the upcoming sixth season of the popular CBS comedy series.

Showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman were very generous to the crowd inside Ballroom 20 at Comic-Con on Friday, teasing what to expect after leaving Pete’s (Richie Moriarty) fate up in the air at the end of Season 5. That will get addressed quite immediately upon the show’s return, as the pair already told Deadline, but they went a step further at SDCC to prepare audiences for the fact that the Pete crisis won’t necessarily be solvedright away. Overall, they remained pretty mum on Pete details, though.

They made up for that by dropping a steady flow of other hints about what’s to come. While the series won’t technically return until the spring, the network is tiding audiences over with hourlong HalloweenandChristmas specials this coming fall.

“In the Halloween special, which is our first ever hourlong, we’re gonna meet Hetty’s sister, her mustachioed sister Margaret, who’s been referenced several times in the show,” Wiseman revealed to many oohs and aahs inside the room, adding that the episode will introduce her “in a sort of unusual way.”

“She’s gonna be a type of ghost that we have never seen,” he added.

As for this year’s Christmas special, “it’s inspired by what we think would be one of Jay and probably Trevor’s favorite movies, Die Hard,” Port shared.

Speaking of the holiday specials, there’s more. While he didn’t reveal which episode will get the honor, one of the specials will feature the show’s “first ever ghost-on-ghost possession,” Port said.

Season 6 will also coincide with the 100th episode of Ghosts. That’s historically been a big milestone in television, and it’s even rarer these days as episode orders have shrunk with the rise of streaming. Just like many showrunners before them, Port and Wiseman are planning to make an event out of it.

With that episode, it looks like Ghostsis going a little meta. As it turns out, the in-universe reality show that the Woodstone ghosts have taken a liking to, It’s Getting Hot in Here, will also be celebrating its 100th episode soon, the showrunners teased. Go figure!

As if that wasn’t already plenty to look forward to, Wiseman also revealed that the ghost boundary will play a pretty big part in Season 6.

Well, to a certain extent it always does, since it keeps Woodstone’s ghosts (except for Pete) on the property at all times, but in the spring viewers can expect that “later on in the season, something temporarily may happen to the ghost boundary,” he told the crowd.

As always, the fans came to Ballroom 20 ready to throw their own questions and ideas at the creative team. One attendee dressed as Brandon Scott Jones’ Isaac Higgintoot suggested that, perhaps, the Revolutionary War vet had something to do with the unfortunate, silencing crack in the Liberty Bell.

Port and Wiseman loved the idea, and while you never know if that might inspire a future storyline, the one thing the showrunners reminded audiences that they can definitely count on is that they’ll continue to intersect the beloved Woodstone ghosts with real historical events as much as they can.

Ghostswill return to the airwaves sometime this fall with its Halloween special and again around Christmastime before premiering Season 6 in 2027.
