GagaOOLala launches new drama slate driven by Japan’s manga strategy

The streaming platform introduces four live-action adaptations backed by a Japanese comic industry valued at ¥692.5 billion (approx. $4.23 billion) and a national ¥20 trillion (approx. $122.3 billion) content export push.

Streaming service GagaOOLala has unveiled its new four-title summer lineup, leveraging established manga properties, popular talent, and music to reach international markets. The slate is supported by a massive domestic market: Japan’s print and digital comics industry reached ¥692.5 billion (approx.$4.23 billion) in 2025—with digital accounting for 76 percent—providing a continuous pipeline for screen adaptations. Furthermore, this multi-platform approach aligns with Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) IP360 program, which targets ¥20 trillion (approx. $122.3 billion) in global content sales by 2033.

The new slate features “Duty First, Kiss Later”, combining a popular manga by Suu (over 150,000 copies in circulation) with tokusatsu stars Shu Watanabe (Kamen Rider OOO) and Ryusuke Saito (Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger).

“The Servant Prince”, based on a manga with over two million downloads, stars BUDDiiS leader Ogawa Fuminori alongside Seto Toshiki, with BUDDiiS also performing the opening theme.

Also debuting is “My Summer of You”, the first screen adaptation of Nagisa Furuya’s reprinted manga, starring Tomoya Oku and Kazuto Mokudai, accompanied by a new mix of Masaharu Fukuyama’s 2010 ballad “Hotaru”.

Completing the additions is “Are the Sexy Buttocks Not Good?”, adapted from Tama Hatoya’s manga—which has topped 1.9 million print and digital copies—starring Sho Sakai and Yuki Kimisawa, with intimacy coordinator Momoko Nishiyama attached to the production.
