    GagaOOLala Expands Japanese BL Lineup

Global LGBTQ+ streaming platform combines manga adaptations, cross-border remakes, idol talent and tokusatsu stars to broaden the international reach of Japanese Boys’ Love content.

GagaOOLala is expanding its Japanese Boys’ Love (BL) catalog through “JBL Express,” a new summer campaign featuring eight Japanese series designed to strengthen the international presence of the genre through a mix of manga adaptations, cross-border remakes, music partnerships and recognizable talent. The initiative underscores the growing role of streaming platforms in connecting Japanese BL productions with global audiences beyond traditional television distribution.

The campaign reflects the increasingly diversified ecosystem supporting Japanese BL, where successful titles are no longer discovered through a single release window. Instead, audiences engage with new series through manga communities, actor fanbases, music releases, television exposure, social media, cross-market adaptations and global streaming availability.

Among the featured titles is “Duty First, Kiss Later,” starring Kamen Rider OOO actor Shu Watanabe and “Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger” cast member Ryusuke Saito as two police officers whose professional rivalry evolves into romance. The series combines a well-known manga property with workplace comedy and tokusatsu casting.

“The Servant Prince” marks the first leading television role for BUDDiiS leader Fuminori Ogawa, who portrays a former school “prince” whose fortunes reverse after reconnecting with a classmate he once treated as a servant. The group’s involvement extends beyond the cast, with BUDDiiS also performing the series’ opening theme.

“My Summer of You,” adapted from Nagisa Furuya’s manga, stars Tomoya Oku and Kazuto Mokudai as two high school students brought together through a shared passion for cinema. The production incorporates sequences filmed on 8mm film and features a new arrangement of Masaharu Fukuyama’s ballad “Hotaru.”

Workplace romance “Are the Sexy Buttocks Not Good?” pairs Sho Sakai and Yuki Kimisawa in a story centered on two colleagues separated by a 17-year age difference. Adapted from Tama Hatoya’s manga, the production formally credits intimacy coordinator Momoko Nishiyama, highlighting the growing adoption of structured communication, performer boundaries and choreographed intimacy within Japanese television production.

One of the campaign’s most significant additions is “Your Sky Hare Nochi Koi,” which premiered on August 2 as a Japanese adaptation of the Thai BL drama “Your Sky,” a domestic and international success in 2024. Starring Isshin Aihara and Ayuta Fukuda, the remake demonstrates how established BL intellectual property is increasingly traveling between Asian markets through localized adaptations.

The lineup also includes “After Moving Seats, The Boy Behind Me Has a Crush on Me,” which premiered August 6 as an eight-episode adaptation of the Grand Prize-winning title from the inaugural BL Short Manga Awards. Starring Eito Konishi and Gennosuke, the series follows two high school students after a hidden written confession unexpectedly comes to light.

Additional titles include “Popular Serizawa Acts Weird Around Me,” a school romance exploring the contrast between public confidence and private vulnerability, and “Hold on, Harutora-kun,” directed by Keisuke Shibata and Masaki Kishida. Starring Tsubasa Nakagawa and Masaya Sakuragi, the dormitory-set romance examines themes of identity, acceptance and emotional openness.

Through “JBL Express,” GagaOOLala is positioning Japanese BL within a broader cross-media and cross-border strategy that combines publishing, television, music, fandom and streaming. The campaign showcases a diverse range of storytelling, from police comedies and workplace romances to school dramas and coming-of-age narratives, while reinforcing the platform’s focus on expanding global access to LGBTQ+ content through premium Asian productions.
