Proof the Fourth Wing TV Show Is Full Steam Ahead
Fourth Wing—the first of three published fantasy novels in Yarros’ Empyrean five-book series—follows 20-year-old Violet, who, at the order of her military general mother, is forced to become a dragon rider at Basgiath War College in the kingdom of Navarre. After giving up her dreams as a scholarly scribe, Violet is pushed to her limits as she navigates deadly trials and combat, while also clashing with powerful dragon rider Xaden.
While the TV show was first announced way back in October 2023, fan frenzy reached another level after Amazon revealed that the fantasy adaptation officially received a full series order during an upfronts presentation in May 2026.
The Fourth Wing adaptation is being produced by Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society, with the Oscar winner serving as an executive producer alongside Amazon, Yarros and Outlier president Elizabeth Raposo. As for who is the head dragon rider in charge? Showrunner Meredith Averill, who joined the projectin September 2025 after taking over for Moira Walley-Beckett.

At the time, Yarros expressed her excitement about the Haunting of Hill House and Good Wife producer coming aboard, writing on Instagram, “Welcome to the team, Meredith Averill!”
“Guys, I love everything this wonderful woman has worked on and I’m so excited to have her joining us,” she continued. “What an incredible ensemble of talent we have gathered around the show! Here we go!”
And as for the latest on the books the show will be based on? Following the releases of Fourth Wing and Iron Flame in 2023, followed by Onyx Storm in January 2025, Yarros recently gave fans an Empyrean companion book titled Threshing Day—a collection of short stories chronicling how several characters bonded with their dragons—on Sept. 29, 2026.
After that? Along with the fourth and fifth novels in the planned pentalogy, Yarros will also be releasing the first volume of a Fourth Wing graphic novel next year.
